Leaving the USA, Just go?
« on: August 19, 2015, 05:45:39 PM »
I haven't seen this addressed anywhere, so I thought this seemed the most logical place to ask.  Strictly in regard only to leaving the US, other than settle your affairs is there anything you need to do to leave the country? Notify anyone? IRS or credit bureaus? It seems odd to just leave the country with no protocol and I feel I might be missing an important part of the puzzle here!

"It depends".  ;D

A lot will depend on your current state.  That's usually the trickiest bit.  While I moved to the UK "directly" from Colorado, I technically no longer had ties to Colorado (long story), so before I left, I transferred my drivers license to Florida, all my mailing correspondence to my parent's house in Florida, my voter's registration to Florida...  partly to ensure I would not have to pay Colorado state tax on my UK earnings.

It's likely your state's drivers license will become invalid after you take up residence outside the state.  When you file your first tax return to the IRS in 2015, you'll update your address with them then.

Not much else I can think of!  I would recommend having a few copies of your high school and/or college transcripts in case you need them at some point.

There is a change of address form you can fill out for the IRS if you want to, but it's not required.

KFDancer... Colorado requires I pay income tax on my UK earnings?! sh*t...
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

I'm not sure in your case.

In my case, I was a U.S. employee, being paid in USD to a US account while working in the UK.  My company was paying my UK tax and "equalizing" my pay based on my US tax home.  By transferring back to Florida, I pocketed a couple of hundred dollars more a month in take-home pay.
