Marriage then moving
« on: September 27, 2015, 01:13:04 AM »
Hi. I'll be marrying a UK citizen here in the US in January, then will be moving to Scotland to join my husband as soon as my visa is approved. Does anyone have advice about changing my name on important documents before I leave, such as passport, bank accounts, social security card, drivers license? Thanks!

The passport is the biggie.  If you change that before you apply for your visa it will make your life much easier!  As your visa will be issued in the name on your passport.

I would change everything. The passport is the biggie though. I would say it is worth the wait.

I am stuck with passport and everything in the UK being in my married name, but everything in the US is in my old name, which makes it tricky cashing cheques, de-investing investments that are in my old name while not having a US bank account... Change as much as possible before you come! If you decide to do it later, not only will it be a huge hassle, but it will cost extra to replace docs in your new name (BRP, driving licenses, plus the banks here have made it a major hassle - went in five times, even went up to Scotland to go to one of my banks and still not all of the name changes are right).

2004-2008: Student Visa
2008-2010: Tier 1 PSW
2010-2011: Tier 4
2011-2014: Tier 2
2013-2016: New Tier 2 (changed jobs)

12/05/16: Citizenship ceremony!

Okay, that settles it, then. Hugely important! Thanks so much to you both.  :)
