The British fascination with Spray Cheese (or "Cheez")
« on: November 06, 2015, 11:02:20 PM »
I brought a can of American spray cheese to my British office work party and made them all try it.

Here's the results:

Oh that took me back a ways!  Back in my 20's, when we lived on an Oakland, CA navy base, one of my neighbors and I loved getting a bottle of wine, box of Ritz crackers, and a jar of Kraft Olive and Pimento Cheese Spread and just eat and chat while our kids were taken care of by their dads for a change.  *sigh* Such happy memories.....   :)

However, Kraft no longer sells Olive and Pimento Cheese Spread, and as I can't imagine actually eating it anymore I'm not particularly heart broken.   ;)

Great blog!  You must have some very adventurous work colleagues to be willing to try that stuff.   ;D

Back in August, my grandma and my youngest sister & cousin (16 & 14, respectively) came for a visit.

We were standing in the checkout line at the grocery store, and the girls were looking at something and whispering, and my sister finally asked me 'what the hell is that?'

Primula.  Flavoured, squirty cheese, in a toothpaste tube.  From Europe.

So I explained, and then reminded them that, the next time someone started railing about the horrors of American cheese, they should just mention Primula.

According to a writer David Tanis in the New York Times Americans do not have the culinary delicacy known as a sausage roll - can it be true?

Should we be preparing to have Greggs invade America?

Pigs in blankets are the closest Americans come to sausage rolls.

And we definitely don't have scotch eggs!

You know, the things could take off. They seem perfect for the American market. I can see them on a rotating warmer in a Quickie Mart. Might need some tinkering with spices/sauces....Sriracha or something.....maybe some of the aforementioned gooey cheese in there.
I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

I was recently thinking about this too. Husband keeps trying to get me to eat sausage rolls. I don't like how fine the meat is ground in UK sausages... It's a texture thing.

I think corn dogs are the American equivalent of sausage rolls.

You can get them just about anywhere, they're easy to eat, all ages enjoy them. They're quintessentially American. A hot dog dipped in corn batter and fried.
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

Pigs in a blanket in the UK is a sausage wrapped in bacon.

I have had sausage rolls containing pork and stilton.

Corn dogs do not  equal Greggs sausage rolls!  I would walk a mile for a corn dog but I am surrounded by Greggs

I would kill for a corn dog. I don't think I ate any when I was last in the US and that bums me out a bit.

The only thing is I am REALLY picky about hot dogs... I really only like oscar meyer all beef franks.

All the hot dogs I've seen here have been in jars or cans. Freaks me out a bit!

No, no, no.... you haven't seen the Herta frankfurters in the refrigerated section with the sliced ham/deli meats?  Go and have a look!!  They are really good... taste just like any hot dog I remember from the US.
