Any old time members (from 10+ years ago) still here?
« on: November 22, 2015, 02:18:33 AM »
I used to post here regularly as Honeybee 10(!) or so years ago when I was studying abroad in Glasgow in my early 20s. Last night I nostalgically looked back at my old posts and it brought back a flood of memories.

It seems like it's much quieter here than it used to be, so probably nobody will see this, but I'm wondering how everyone from those days is.

Are you still in the UK? US? What's changed for you in the past 10 years?

As for us, we are happily settled in Maine with two under four. Finally found home, after years and years of feeling torn between both countries.
Plans on hold 'cuz Brexit

Hiya

I have always been Kaylesh here and have been here forever rofl..
I'm a Masshole born n bred came here to Scotland in 1999. Have the best of both worlds having dual citizenship.. If i ever hit the lottery i'd prolly have a home both here in Scotland and in Massachusetts, in either Osterville or Wellfleet on the Cape. Two of my favourite(but most $$$$ areas on the Cape lol ) .
Still loving living here in the Fife region of Scotland, still working full time, wishing I could retire early and pursue my avid hobby of photography but hey ho.. lolol
Nice to see a "old timer" and glad you have found "home" after years of feeling torn between the two countries.

Hi, welcome back :).

I'm not quite a 10+ years old timer, but I've been on the forum for almost 9 years :).

I'm British and live in the UK, but at the time I joined the forum (Jan 2007) I was in the process of applying for a second US student visa to study for a PhD (in 2003/04 I spent my 3rd year of undergrad in the US). In Jan 2008 I moved to the US for the PhD, but didn't get on with it and wasn't happy there, and so after months of agonising over what to do, I moved back to the UK in August 2008... and have been back here ever since :).

Though it was always my childhood dream to live in the US, as an adult, reality set in and I've found that I'm happier in the UK and so don't plan on trying to move back. For the last 5 years, I've been working as a meteorologist here in the UK, which is great because it allows me to travel a fair amount... in the last 2.5 years, I've spent 12 months abroad, working in the Falklands and Ascension Island and this time next year, I should be off to Antarctica for a couple of months :).

Hi Honeybee... I remember you from the old days!
Unfortunately, my account name has changed / account closed/ new account opened several times over the years (stupid, I know), and I can't remember *all* of my various names... you might remember me as otterpop, genau, or quartergill?

10 years ago, I would have been living in Linlithgow in an unhappy marriage, and probably plotting my escape!  ;)  After I 'escaped', I lived in Edinburgh for a year, then moved back to Glasgow, where I'd lived before, and where all my friends were.  Stayed there quite happily for several years until last year, when me and my boyfriend moved 'doon the watter' to lovely Helensburgh.  We're still in Glasgow almost every weekend, though!  :)

Good to hear from you again!

Looking back through that stuff made me sort of nostalgic too.
I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

I was here under a different name (long since forgotton!) in the early noughties, as my wife and I made our way through ILR and then citizenship. Back then we lived in London. We've since slid about 50 miles south. The UK is very much home; we won't be moving back.

Over the years I've stopped by UK Yankee every so often. Don't post a lot, but when I do there are usually lambs involved…

Hi Honeybee!  I remember you!

We are still in the UK.  I became a dual citizen quite a few years ago.  Wanted to be just like our daughters....lol  Poor hubby is the odd man out...lol

After over 10 years for me (22 years for hubby), we moved from Plymouth, Devon to hubby's hometown of Bournemouth, Dorset back in September. We sold our place and are in the process of purchasing my late MIL's home.  She passed away unexpectedly a year ago.  Hubby retired from the Royal Marines Commandos in 2012, so no ties to P'mouth anymore.  We just decided moving back near family would be nice for our daughters, who are now 10 and 6.  So here we are almost 11 years later.  We are adjusting very well, and it is lovely being near family.

Glad to hear you and your family are doing well, and have found "home".  :)

Hello!  No idea how long I've been on UKY but since I've been married nearly 10 years and started the fiancée's visa process in Autumn 2005 I'd guess it'd be about 10 years since I started posting.

Still in the UK, in London, only about 30 miles away from where I started.  I'm not exactly nostalgic, more relieved.  I came over, and met my now husband, at a time when I could stay for a school semester without a visa.  Three years later we got married at a time when there was no age requirements, which there were (no repealed) a couple of years after that.  My fiancé wouldn't meet the financial requirements which there now are.  And I had ILR in 2 years and citizenship after 3 years, 3 months.

Everything is all change, much worse for moving and visas, but much much better for me for my relationship and situation.

ETA: Joined March 2005.  Sounds about right.  2 years after we met and 6 months after we got engaged so it was time to quit reading and starting posting to figure out what we needed to do.

Hiya I have been online here since 2002. I haven't looked back at old posts but I'm sure if I did  it would bring back old memories. We married in 2003 and I became a dual citizen in 2004 and I had a baby in 2010. Everything has happened so quickly and I truly love this part of the U.K.  Eastbourne. Nice to know there some old posters still around. I still get help from this site after all these years
My home for 18 years since June 2002. Became a citizen 2006

Aww, yay oldbees coming out of the wood work!  I'm an 8 yearer on here.  Funny that 8 years ago, I was packing up my life to move to the other side of the ocean all by my lonesome on a grand adventurer. What a trip it's been!
I've never gotten food on my underpants!
Work permit (2007) to British Citizen (2014)
You're stuck with me!
