Plus sized women's clothing
« on: November 23, 2015, 05:51:37 PM »
First off I should mention that I'm the British wife of the ex-pat in this scenario, although I did live in the US for 22 years and have only just returned to Scotland. Having gotten that out of the way I am wondering if any other large sized women out there are having the same problem as I am which is finding good quality reasonably priced clothing in actual department stores in the UK! I have been able to find online resources however it is not the same as shopping in person. Even Debenhams had nothing larger than a size 20 (UK) and I am a size 26 (UK), all I can find is Evans, who, like Lane Bryant was in the US for many years monopolizing the market it seems. It's not as though there aren't any plus size British women out there, walk down any High Street and there is a significant presence. Any suggestions as to shopping? Thanks!

Besides Evans, there is simply be, Yours,  and taking shape that I know of off the top of my head. I believe Asos has a decent plus size range, but they are online only.

Yes alisonr, I am familiar with those online stores, thanks for posting though.....it's actual physical shops I am trying to find, where I can go and check things out and try stuff on. Oh Macy's where are you when I need you? LOL.

Taking shape has some physical shops at least. There's one here in Cardiff. And yours clothing has a physical store here too.

I'm afraid it's mostly online.  Even department stores/supermarkets that do offer plus sizes, tend to pull an Old Navy, and not stock anything over a 20/22 in the shop.  And while there are other plus-size retailers that do have brick & mortar shops, they're all down in England.  And, by 'England,' they mean London.  And by 'all', they mean 2 or 3, at most.

Yours Clothing actually has opened a handful of shops in the Central Belt, but their stuff doesn't tend to be to my taste.  (Neither is Evans, really, and it's also overpriced.)

The one up-side here, vs. the US, is that there are a lot more catalog/online retailers, and they offer very easy credit, cheap/free shipping, and free returns.  So, I tend to order from SimplyBe/Marisota, and sometimes from Curvissa (though Next and K&Co/Littlewoods do this, too). Because I'm ordering on account, I'll order multiple sizes/colours, stuff I'm not sure about, etc., and then just return it if I don't like it or it doesn't fit.  If I'd tried to do that in the U.S., it would've meant having $$$ tied up waiting for a refund, and probably losing out on shipping charges.

Since, unlike me, you can actually drive to real shops, you might want to check if places like ASOS, New Look, etc. let you order online and send to a local(ish) shop;  that way, you can actually go in, try stuff on, accessorize, etc., and return stuff right there at the shop.  I've done that with JCPenney in the US, and I'm sure Next do it here.

But, in general, I'd encourage you to check SimplyBe/Marisota (same company, same credit account, just slightly different ranges) and Curvissa.  They've got a good range of styles.

I buy all of my clothes online, either from Simply Be, ASOS or LaRedoute.  I hate shopping in actual bricks & mortar, physical shops, so I don't know if there's anything new out there besides bloody awful Evans.
However, if you find yourself in Manchester, there is an actual Simpy Be shop inside the Arndale Centre.  I was there earlier this year and was slightly disappointed, as the shop is small and doesn't stock the entire range, but it was still a huge improvement on Evans.
