Moving from Philadelphia to the Cotswolds in January
« on: December 02, 2015, 02:18:45 PM »
Hi! I'm moving to the Cotswolds (not sure whereabouts just yet) in January. I'm from the Philadelphia area (though I spent a few years in New York), and I'm moving to follow my handsome British husband, who followed me to the US first. So, in other words, now it's my turn! And I'm excited for the adventure. I'm a fiction writer and a sommelier. I'm hoping to find a creative community in England and, perhaps, on this board. I think it's great that this board exists to help make the transition easier for new and seasoned expats. I'm looking forward to sharing my experiences and I'll be grateful for future advice and perspective from other UK Yankees. Hope you're all enjoying the holiday season!

You should find plenty of good wine here, and France is a short hop away

F4mandolin: I'm starting to realize how pricey it is... But I'm keeping my fingers crossed! At least it's cheaper than London. Lived there for a bit, in an apartment the size of a cardboard box, but it was wonderful.

Jimbocz: I am so excited for the wine and the proximity to France. I don't know if you know much about Pennsylvania wine and liquor laws, but they aren't very fun and the selection isn't very diverse.

They have some funny and arcane liquor laws here but none of them affect your ability to get and drink whatever you want.

They do a funny thing where they have to put up a plaque outside every pub with the name of the licensee and possibly even the measures that the alcohol comes in.  So, it will say something like "Jerimia Jobsworth is licensed to sell alcohol in these premises" and then something about pints, drams and hogsheads
