In Need of a Taste from Home
« on: December 19, 2015, 01:29:34 PM »
Hey everyone!

I'm a Texan studying in the UK and I'm in desperate need of some good restaurants that serve Southern food. Something like Southern biscuits, fried chicken, mash, etc. (if the place comes with with non-bottled iced sweet tea I'll be your best friend!)

Does anyone know of a place?

I live a 40mins tube ride from central London so I don't mind going into the city. I also live in halls so as much as I'd love to cook this food myself I only have a microwave.

Thanks so much!

I'm so glad so many people have your back sembree. As a native Texan, I know how hard it is to not have those delicious comforts from home

Texan here new in the UK as well. (spousal visa)  I Cook all of the comforts of southern foods and I'd be glad to help if there is anything specific that you want to learn to make with the available products here.  Hubby and I are not rich so amazon triple the price orders of American foods is out of the question for us.

Without knowing anything about those specific links, I can comment that my experience with UK restaurants that try to be American is overwhelmingly disappointing.  Always expensive and miserly about giving things that you expect to be free and abundant, like nachos.  When you go to an expensive Mexican place and they make you pay for stale nachos from a bag, it's hard not to be angry.

Make your own if you can

I like this too! Great turn of phrase.

Seriously though, trying to find a restaurant that will be just like home is a dead end.  I'd suggest you forget about it and find your favourite local restaurant that serves local food to local people.  I'd suggest a Jamaican place, and embrace curried goat or ox tail.  That's the path to happiness.  You don't live in Texas any more!

When you go back to Texas, you'll have something to miss.

Like when I ordered a 'Philly cheese steak' from Wetherspoon's, especially after they bragged how 'authentic' it is.  :\\\'(

I feel your pain.  Everything at the Witherspoons comes straight out of the freezer.  I bet that "cheese steak " was frozen whole

Well to be honest, the sandwich didn't taste *that* bad, it just was in no way, shape or form a cheese steak. :)

I'm yet to find acceptable pulled pork or a decent burger. I missed so much from the UK when I lived in the US and now back here I miss american food! You can't win haha.

I agree on the burgers for sure!  I can't figure out why British restaurants feel the need to put breadcrumbs in their burgers. So unnecessary and adds nothing. I stick with making my own in my cast iron griddle. Or five guys if I'm feeling lazy.
