Taken from Wikipedia:

McMansion can be a large, new house in a subdivision of similarly large houses, which all seem to be mass-produced and lacking in distinguishing characteristics, as well as appearing at odds with the traditional local architecture.

Play on words of McDonalds mass production that looks the same each time.

I didn't know it was a 'thing'... just assumed it was your own made-up term!  LOL!!

false elegance

Ersatz?

In Florida they mostly shoot for faux-Mediterranean......but with the majority of the frontal exterior made up of two huge anachronistic garage doors.

It's a very real phrase!

Urban dictionary definitions are always entertaining...

Oh, that's a great word.  I'm somewhat chagrined to admit I had to look it up but, yes, ersatz elegance works - and it alliterates!  That's always a win in my book.   ;)

The Urban Dictionary definition linked by KFdancer uses the word pretentious, which is really spot on for describing McMansions.  :)

Oh, that's a great word.

My wife and I argue about "ersatz". I think it includes a little extra "something"...a sort of striving.....while my wife thinks "cheap copy" is fine.

I like to think of the Hiddlesville Community Player's production of Hamlet. You know, very earnest, worked hard on it.....but the accents are slightly Pennsylvanian and the cardboard ramparts sag.....and Hamlet wears tennis shoes.
