Just be grateful that your fiance isn't Australian!  It costs over twice as much for a fiance/spouse visa to Australia than it does to the UK...

You're spot on--my stepkids live in NZ & it's not only expensive but time consuming to arrange visits. Can't just pop over for a long weekend :P

Er, if you couldn't afford to pay the visa fees, you probably couldn't afford to live in the UK without public assistance, (particularly if you're coming on a fiance visa and can't work until after you're married), meaning that you wouldn't be eligible for a visa in the first place.

I agree, the flights are expensive, but why do you need to stay in a hotel? If you're visiting a loved one, why don't you stay at their home? Staying in a hotel makes it a vacation, not a visit.  As for a rental car, many places in the US and the UK (especially the UK) are accessible by public transportation.

Or do you mean the hotel and the rental car are for when you go to the consulate to apply for the visa?  Doing it in person instead of by post is your choice.

If your "loved one" still lives at home, maybe a hotel or B&B might be a nice change of pace rather than being underfoot or sharing walls with potential in-laws (and or the loved one's children)...which would account for various hotel and B&B charges in my situation.

As for *public transport* - sure, I could take a Greyhound bus from Miami International (after taking a cab from the airport to the depot) to Fort Myers - but it leaves 5 hours after the flight lands and drops me off at my general destination at about 2 in the morning.  From which I then have to take another cab to get to my specific destination.

Oh, or I could pay almost twice as much and fly directly into Fort Myers.

Or I could rent a car and drive from Miami Int'l to Fort Myers.

Which accounts for the numerous rental car expenses in my situation.

So - yep - it can cost a lot to sustain a trans-atlantic relationship.

Yep and I'm still moaning on about my £1000 mobile phone bill.

Oh - don't even get me started on the phone bills!

I'll never forget the $400 bill that almost gave my mother a heart attack - of course, this was back in 1985/6...  ::)   ;)

And the sending of packages for those holidays you can't spend together.

I didn't have any choice at that time, I had to go to Africa for a month - work - 5 countries in 4 weeks, it was mobile with international roaming or nothing. And it didn't work in 2 of the countries so I had hotel phone bills as well.

I agree that it is expensive, but these are all choices that we make.  The length and the number of phone calls we make, the number of visits,  whether we choose to stay in a home with other family members or stay in a hotel, whether to take a taxi from the airport or use the bus or the tube or travel at odd hours.  You determine your priorities; if you want to spend extra money on relationship-related things, then you spend less on other things in your life.   It was your decision to be in an international relationship, your decision to take on the expenses involved.
