I really struggled with my taxes the first year I was here, but once I figured out what forms I needed and what info I needed to fill them out, the years since have been easy. It was just that first step that was hard.

I save my previous year's tax return with notes I've made about where I got the numbers from (link to exchange rates used by the IRS, why I put certain 0s and 1s, etc) so I don't need to second guess myself the next year. It makes it soooo much easier, but that first step was a tough one.

After you figure out what forms you need and how to fill them out, the only changes will be little tweaks if your situation changes (if you need to start filling a FinCEN/FBAR) or if the reporting changes (like the health coverage exemption recently).

I just became compliant last year after spending 17 years in the UK and spent a great deal of money, however, I think it was money well spent. I will pay again this year and maybe next, however, I will eventually do it myself.

One question I have is i was told that I have to mail in my tax return as they cannot be electronically filled, the IRS cannot receive a tax return electronically when the total income on Form 1040, line 22 is zero, and all the other numbers on the return that come after it are also zero

Has anyone else came across this?
