Changing Credit Cards from US to UK & building credit
« on: January 21, 2016, 05:27:07 PM »
I can't remember where I read it, but I know someone on here talked about converting their US American Express card to a UK American Express. I'm reading a little about it on their website (www.americanexpress.com/global-card-transfers) but the guy on the phone was not particularly helpful beyond giving me this web address, so I'm hoping members who've gone through this conversion can help, especially since other people mentioned how hard it is to secure credit in the UK.

Questions:
- did you end up getting rid of all your US credit cards when you got UK credit cards? I kind of want to keep mine open and take care of my US credit even while I'm gone in case I ever come back.
- would doing a transfer like this help me build up UK credit faster?
- will it be hard to do a transfer like this? as in, can I be refused since I'm moving and obviously don't have a job or anything yet? (The website says I only need my US AmEx #, a UK address & UK phone number...)

I'm concerned that if I change the card, they'll reassess my limits and give me like a super small amount. I don't want to be punished for changing my card over...

Are there any other tips?

I changed my US card to a UK card.  There was definitely a bit of hassle to get it.  I had to pick a type (went with Costco)  I had to do the form, I think they mailed me something, and then I had to mail it back with a copy of my passport and such?  It was several years ago so a bit difficult to remember.

My credit limit on my AmEx is £15k.  I think it was $20k USD, so I'm very happy with that.  It was not lowered when I converted.

I have a US credit card account and my UK AmEx account and small credit builder MasterCard through Capital One (which I only use when they don't accept AmEx).  I honestly think converting my AmEx is what has helped build my credit so quickly.

When you moved, did you have a UK job already? I'm concerned they're going be like, "You don't have a job, so we're only giving you £500" or something. (My AmEx is $12k limit presently). I also didn't want to close the US AmEx so I could keep that on my US credit reports as a great account, too. LOL. So complicated!

I was wondering if switching the AmEx would help be me build UK credit up. Thanks for that!

I did have a job (work visa).

I do think you are just converting the account to a new currency and not reapplying.
