Mexican Foods
« on: January 30, 2016, 08:51:26 AM »
I just found this place while on Facebook and ordered some goodies. If anyone else is craving Mexican food, they've got fresh tamales

She's American!  Her tamales are epic.

It looks very nice, but unfortunately she charges more than double shipping rates (£15!!!) to ship to Orkney.  On principle, I won't use any vendor who rips people off this way when they could just as well use the Royal Mail for the same price anywhere in the UK!

Does look nice. I looked all over the website to find the company location and nada. On principle, I don't order from any on-line vendor who doesn't make their location public/obvious. That's just me - one of my (many) quirks.

I did google the company, and find that the registered address is in London.
Married December 1992 (my 'old flame' whom I first met in the mid-70s)
1st move to UK - 1993 (Letter of Consent granted at British Embassy in Washington DC)
ILR - 1994 (1 year later - no fee way back then!)
Back to US in 2000
Returned to UK July 2011 (Spousal Visa/KOL endorsement)
ILR - September 2011
Application for naturalization submitted July 2014
Approval received 15-10-14; ceremony scheduled for 10 November!
Passport arrived 25 November 2014. Finally done!

Interesting. I never play poker with a guy named after a Midwestern city.

SonofaSailor, you always make me smile :)
I did order and they were delicious! By the way, she is in London and when you place an order, she sends you an email from her personal email address and then asks for feedback when the order arrives.

For someone who grew up in Texas, its things like this that makes being away from home so much better. They were fresh, delicious and I feel good about supporting another American in the UK with her business.

Well I am going to order!

I absolutely love tamales. I have threatened to make them myself.....but I think they are one of those things.....like biscuits - you need to make them a lot.

Over the past couple of years, I have been conducting an informal taste test of burritos across the UK. Burrito places in particular seem to have become more popular and numerous over the past three years or so.

The best burritos in the UK that I have had were at Boojum in Belfast. The worst was someplace in the City where the salsa tasted like it had gone off.

My local place, Pinto in Glasgow, is good by British standards but not great.

While it might not be the most authentic, I also like Wahaca in London.

We have a chiquito in my town. Haven't been there yet, but it looks popular. Not sure if it's a chain or not? Has anybody had them before?

Chiquito is a chain. I haven't been there, but I believe it is Tex-mex.

Chiquito is a chain... it's basically a 'Mexican' version of Frankie and Benny's (which claims to be 'New York Italian', but actually originated in Manchester, England :P)

Chiquito is okay, but not authentic Mexican by any means... as long as you don't expect it to taste like real Mexican food, I don't think it's that bad.

Bear in mind, though, that I'm a UK citizen and did not grow up with Mexican food by any means - however, I did live in New Mexico for 18 months as a student, and I've spent over 2 years in the US in total, as well as a month in Central America, so I've eaten the real stuff as well and know how it's supposed to taste.
