two licenses USAA car insurance in UK
« on: February 02, 2016, 11:42:14 AM »
Hi,
I have a question about car insurance in UK.
I grew up in Italy and got a EU license about 15 years ago.
I lived in the US for 6 years and during that time i got a new drivers license  and insured my vehicles with USAA for the time i was there.
I've now been living in the UK for 4 and half years.  bought a car about two years ago, and when I tried to get insurance i noticed that uk companies would quote me much higher than USAA because my wife's license (american) is not valid here and she would have to put down 'provisional' even though she had been driving for over 15 years.
USAA quoted us using our US licenses and we got a much better rate (350£ vs 1600£) so naturally went for it. I remember asking them which drivers license to use and they said the american was fine.
now two years later i've gotten a moving violation and a small non fault accident on my record. It has been recorded on my EU license. If I try to get insurance locally it's insane (over 6000£!!).
my USAA premium has not raised because my US license has remained clean.. what do i do now? btw wife is getting her uk license.
thank you

If you are both driving on US licenses than you are illegal, uninsured drivers.  USAA is taking your money but will NOT cover you in the event of an accident.  We've had other members of the forum caught out with massive bills before in this exact situation.

Apologies, I misread that you used to have an EU license but now use a US license.

Unfortunately your wife needs a UK provisional to drive while you are in the car.  Silly, but it's the law.  The U.K. loves their tough driving restrictions!

As you have a valid EU license, I have no idea what to suggest for you in regards to insurance.  I've not heard of anyone else finding it was cheaper to insure based on their US license before.  As long as you are insured in the event of an accident, I can't see that it matters.

thank you.
only thing that would probably matter is that usaa rate is based on clean us license record, when in fact is not so clean looking at my eu license.
i would ask usaa directly but i don't want to open a can of worms.. might have to though, just to be sure.

To be fair, you also said pretty clearly that you are insured on your US license.

I'm just a layperson but I would be surprised if you can have it both ways.

If I were you, I'd contact a legal professional for a matter like this.

You seem to be saying that although you have an Italian driving licence (which allows you to drive in the UK) you don't have insurance for that licence? Is that correct.

As said, your US driving licences do not allow you to drive in the UK after 1 year meaning your insurers do not have to pay out if they have only insured you on both your US driving licences. Not having valid insurance is a criminal offence in the UK. If you think the premiums are high now because of your driving offences, wait to you have a criminal conviction for driving, to see how high the premiums  will go.

Not telling insurers of anything that will affect your premium, even speeding offences, will invalidate your insurance. As said above, not having valid insurance is a criminal offence in the UK..

You should be insured on your Italian driving licence with your wife as a named driver on a UK Provisional Driving Licence.

Your wife must have a UK provisional driving licence to be allowed to drive and with a valid full driver with her. If she gets caught driving on her US passport only (even with a full driver with her) she will be in court for have the criminal offences of "driving not in accordance with her licence" and "driving without insurance".

I ended up calling them yesterday.
they don't care if i have another license, they use the us driving record. All they care is that I tell them tickets/accidents. So i updated my record
I am insured to drive in the uk through them and my eu license is perfectly valid here, so it's all legal.
I was hoping to get advice from someone that is in my exact position, not just speculations.

thank you tho

It wasn't speculation, it was fact. You need to be insured on your EU licence as your US DL is not valid in the UK.

Have you asked them to confirm in writing that they will pay out on all claims in the UK based on your US licence, even though you are not allowed to drive in the UK on a US licence and must use your Italian DL? If you get that, then you have insurance, or at least a claim if they refuse to pay.

Your wife of course must still have a UK provisional licence to be allowed to drive in the UK as she is no longer allowed to drive in the UK on her US DL.

do you have experience with USAA? they insure military personnel and family living abroad. they don't want my uk license, as they can only use the US license since their driving history database is based in the US. however my EU license allows me to drive here legally.

do you have experience with USAA?

They still have to follow UK law.

However, if you are happy they will pay out in full in the event of an accident, then that's ok.
