US passport renewal -- DX courier will not pick up from us

I need to renew my US passport via the embassy in London.  Unfortunately, DX, the courier that the embassy uses, does not operate in the Orkney Islands.  DX says that I should send my application to the US Embassy in London via Royal Mail.  I called the Embassy and they confirmed that I should send it via Royal Mail Special Delivery.   I'm wondering if anyone else has done this, and has the process worked OK for you?  I'm a wee bit nervous about doing something that is out of the usual process for the Embassy ...

Yes, anyone can send it in via Special Delivery but they prefer DX.  Others have done this with no issue.

Can I just confirm I can do this? I'm having a nightmare trying to book with dx and would much rather just use Royal Mail.

Funny enough I've just sent my UK and US passport to the Uk passport agency for a uk renewal. I was cheap and sent it second class was I a bit too trusting of Royal Mail i guess I'll find out soon

As a dual citizen, are you required to send your US password to the UK passport agency when renewing a UK passport? I don't think you have to do that when you renew your US one.

The U.K. Application for renewal states send in your other passport if you are a dual citizen as well as UK passport . Just received my renewed Uk passport recently. I sent all documents by second class post ! No problems !

Is there any way to track my passport status once it's with the embassy? I finally got Dx to collect from me and they've taken my payment. I know the website says up to 4 weeks, anyone have experience otherwise??

If I remember correctly, when you use DX they give you two reference numbers: one for delivery to the Embassy, and the other for delivery back to you.  I had looked up the second reference number after something like 2 weeks, and it turns out that my passport was already being returned to me.  So that's one way to check..
