We moved from the US (MA) to Cambridge UK over the summer.  Sold our primary residence in MA.

I thought I had a good tax guy in London, spoke several times on the phone, came recommended, but for whatever reason I cannot get him to contact me for an appointment, nor give me a quote for projected cost.   Either he's overworked, or he's trying to trap me into a last minute sign up.

I have a trusted adviser in the US, who I could use, but he's not familiar with US-UK treaties, so I fear I may fall prey to double taxation.

If anyone uses and can recommend someone near Cambridge UK I'd be very grateful.   This first split year is tricky, especially with UK running April-April - I'm hoping in the future that it will be simple enough to do my own US taxes.

Are you sure you can't do this yourself? If you can describe your situation we can try to point you in the right direction. In most cases the DTA isn't really a big factor. You might not have to file a UK return at all and once you understand Foreign Earned Income Exclusion and Foreign Tax Credits US tax isn't too difficult.

You don't necessarily have to use someone local. There are a few online reputable accountants who will file taxes for you, like newcomer link: http://www.greenbacktaxservices.com/ [nonactive] . I wouldn't bother going to a larger organizations unless you are making a lot of money and have significant investments.

Thanks All.  Nun, I might be able to do it by myself, but I am working full time, tutoring child with learning disability, have wife who cannot help, cannot drive - I need some outside help with this first year.  Subsequent years will be easier.

If the guy from London gets back next week I'll go with him, otherwise I'll use the chap in the US who has done my US takes for the past 15 years (and seems more knowledgeable than I had thought on UK/US).

As I understand it the matter of urgency is to file an extension and do a rough calculation and pay any that's owing (so as to avoid penalties and interest).   The actual filing can then take place any time up to 6 months later.

I'll have to file an 8938 since we brought house sale money over - can that wait for the extension or is that due April 15th (or June, like the FBAR ?)

Thanks again

The 8938 is to be filled with your 1040, so you have an automatic extension to June 15. You can apply for extension to October 15, or even December 15. See IRS publication 54.
