Trolley Dollys
« on: March 20, 2016, 08:55:31 AM »
For nearly 6 years I've been schlepping heavy bags of shopping the 1/2 mile walk from town and my shoulders were starting to ache, more often than not.  I always wanted one of those wheeled trolleys but my hubby said they were for OAPs only, and that I would look ridiculous.  I think me walking hunched over, with two giant bags on my back like a pack mule looks ridiculous, but anyway...

A couple months ago I told my husband I simply don't care if people think I'm 'old' - I was getting one.  So I picked a small, cheap trolley just to try it out. A much older friend (who is 65) said as long as it wasn't 'OAP tartan', I'd be 'okay'. Well, it is black, with a tartan flap. :D

I absolutely love this thing and wish I had gotten one years ago. My shoulders no longer ache.  I also made the management decision to have all our heavy items delivered from the grocery store, so I am only picking up fresh produce and meats, and whatever catches my fancy in town.

I am thinking of upgrading to a bigger, step-climbing model in the summer, when my parents send me some money for my birthday.  Does anyone here use these trolleys? Do you recommend any style/brand? I imagine these would be popular with people of all ages, perhaps in big cities, but maybe that's the old, hopeful lady inside me. :D

Well, she was an American girl, raised on promises.
She couldn't help thinking that there was a little more to life, somewhere else.
After all it was a great big world, with lots of places to run to.
And if she had to die trying she had one little promise she was gonna keep.

I want one! A year or so a ago I was looking into one and found that they are seen as quite chic in Paris....or so they said. Here's one I like:

I think the key to these things lies in the Italian notion of Sprezzatura:

"the ability to display an easy facility in accomplishing difficult actions which hides the conscious effort that went into them".

No, but I'm with you on the supermarket deliveries!  Couldn't live without them!

I don't use one but I don't have a need (the stroller basket does the trick).   ;)

My now-husband was horrified that I had a basket on my bike before I bought a car.  I really didn't care.   :P

Hahaha. I've wanted one before too and my husband told me the same thing! Now we pretty much only do deliveries since ASDA has £1 slots. Saves me the half hour walk each way to asda over a windy bridge. Well worth the extra pound.

Oh wow! I love the mail one!  My dad would adore that as well. He is a retired postmaster. :)

I had a basket on my bicycle as well. Is that supposed to be dorky, too?  I think at almost 49, I'm too old to care!   I could never get up the hill here to town on a bicycle. Shame. I miss riding.  :D

I didn't have one when I lived in the UK, but loved the idea of them. I too, was told they were for OAPs, but would see people in their 30s and 40s with them. (Same as I was told wearing shorts 'is not the done thing', but yet when I was out and about I'd see shorts everywhere on warm days.) So, I didn't get a trolley to make life easier, which was silly considering I've never been one to worry about what strangers think of me or what I do. We talk of one day moving back, and I will be getting one if we do.  ;D

I don't know.....I picture this:

Fallgal: Oh look Dad! I've gotten you a trolley that looks like a mail bag!
Dad: Oh jeeez. You know I lugged one of those things around for thirty years...thirty.....years....

Haha!  Lucky for him, he only carried mail for a year in his 40+ year career.   Did you find that bag on Amazon? I actually know he would love one of those to use at my parents' beach house. He already has a trolley, but not a MAIL trolley, and he's impossible to buy for...Father's Day is coming up... :D

Thank you so much!  Father's Day SORTED! :D  I don't care how much it costs to ship to the USA, this is too perfect for him. :)
