Best place to buy wool/yarn online?
« on: March 29, 2016, 02:10:54 PM »
Hi all you knitters and crocheters and other crafty people,

Where is the best place online to find wool/yarn?  I tend to buy it from our local market stalls but I plan to start a project this fall which will require a good deal of yarn and often the market stalls only have a bit of each colour/type.  I am specifically looking for extra chunky yarn.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions! :)

Are you on Ravelry?   http://www.ravelry.com/

It's a fabulous resource for knitters, crocheters etc.

If I'm looking for a particular yarn, I look for it there. It will usually list local and online stockists.

The search functions are awesome too so if you only have a general idea of what you're after, you can get some inspiration.

Popular online sellers.

http://www.celticove.com/

http://www.deramores.com/?gclid=CP_hyPf-5csCFQPgGwod-EUG6g

http://www.woolwarehouse.co.uk/

There are of course many indie and artisan sellers but they usually work in lighter weight yarn.

Try a search on https://www.etsy.com/

http://poshyarn.co.uk/

Wow, thank you very much for all that Larabee. No, I'm not on Ravelry. I am an absolute beginner, so all this is great! Thanks! :)

Oh, it's so much fun!

I found Ravelry a little difficult to navigate at first (that was probably just me) but now I have the hang of it, I haven't looked back!

There are loads of free patterns (as well as paid of course) and people are so happy to help if you get stuck with something.

When I was last at work in the US, a few of us popped up to the local yarn store one lunchtime and bought what we needed to make a scarf each....a couple of years later thanks to Ravelry and youtube, I'm knitting lace. :)

You should definitely join. Look me up if you do.  ;D

Also knit picks now ship to the UK!!!! I bought from them pretty much exclusively back in the US. I absolutely adore their stuff. Plus you get free shipping if you spend over a certain amount, which is super easy to do if you're making something big.

Be careful buying from the US.  You may be luckier than I am but I've been hit with some horrendous customs charges!  :o

My favorite two are KnittyNoddy and Colorsong.  :)

I have ALWAYS wanted to learn to knit.  How did you guys learn?

I learned the basic knit and purl as a child from mother/grandmother but didn't do anything with it.

Picked up the needles again as a lark a few years ago. The basic stuff was like riding a bike, the rest I literally learned by starting a pattern that I found on Ravelry and googling as I went to find out what each instruction meant!
Youtube has a lot of great videos.

There are local knitting groups all over the country. Sorry to keep harping back to Ravelry but if you look there, I bet you'll find one near you!  :)

Just FYI- I haven't had any customs nightmares from Knitpicks.  They are properly set up for international orders and they have fantastic yarns at really good proces for the quality.

KFDancer- I taught myself over a decade ago from books at the public library. But that was pre-YouTube days. :) now if I need a new technique I go to google. :)

As a bonus here's the shawl I knitted for myself for my wedding. :)

That's gorgeous Alison!

I'm going to get some yarn and give it a try.  I bought some needles a few years ago when I was hoping to have someone teach me.   ;D

Thanks, everyone! I really appreciate all the links and tips. I will definitely join Ravelry.  Sounds great.

I tried crocheting as a kid, but didn't have the patience. About a year ago, when I was 48, I decided that I was going to learn to crochet and sew (with a machine) by the time I am 50.  I'll be 49 in June and I've only JUST 'caught on' to basic crocheting. I've bought books, watched videos, but my breakthrough came when I joined a 'craft bee' at our local library. The ladies there love to share their knowledge and told me exactly what I was doing wrong. About two weeks later, it just 'clicked' - at least the very basics because I was shown 'in person'.

The sewing machine - still shiny and new - and all the sewing tools, fabric, etc. my hubby bought for my last birthday is still sitting in its case. One day I will figure that out, too. :)

That shawl is gorgeous, Alison!
