Thanks!! I sewed as a kid. My mom even sent me to summer camp for sewing and I entered things in the local fair.

My granny taught me to crochet but I picked up knitting on my own. I find it easier than crochet, at least for someone like me with low vision who has trouble seeing the individual stitches. With knitting I just have loops exposed on a needle. With crochet you e got to be able to see where to go within the fabric itself.

I'd definitely recommend finding a local knit/crochet group for learning. It so much easier with someone there in person to guide your hands. I'm sure there are loads in/near London close to you kfdancer.

I use Wool Warehouse at http://www.woolwarehouse.co.uk and Love Knitting: http://www.loveknitting.com/drops-knitting-yarn, for very reasonably priced yarn.

Rowan yarns are lovely but a bit pricey. Knitrowan.com has a lot of free patterns, some of which appear on Revelry.

I've been knitting since I was 8, so that's a lot of years but I still haven't mastered knitting in the round. Cables and Fair Isle don't phase me so I should try to get over my fear of small needles attached to a piece of bendy nylon!

I've looked into this before and there is a knitting group in my town but they meet on weekdays and I work office hours.

I mentioned this group to my husband last night and he said, "knitting is easy, I know how to do it."   :o  WHAT?!?  Apparently his mom taught him.  I don't think he'd be able to help me get started but that definitely surprised me!

That is true about the meet-ups being during the week. My local is just once a month, on a Friday afternoon (I work from home, but even still it is sometimes difficult to carve out that time if I'm on a deadline).  I bet a lot of people would join if they started a Saturday meet.

I would be equally surprised if my husband suddenly revealed he knew how to knit! :)  Maybe he could show you some basics, if he remembers.

The sewing machine - still shiny and new - and all the sewing tools, fabric, etc. my hubby bought for my last birthday is still sitting in its case.

Mine too.   :(

Mine too.   :(

I chose mine because of all the reviews claiming how super easy it was to use, perfect for beginners, etc. "My 6-year old granddaughter was sewing drapes in just two days!"  ;D

Well, your 6-year old granddaughter must be far more talented and smarter than I.  :-[

So glad I found this thread. Thanks to everyone who posted those links! I just got back from my local yarn shop and they were out of what I am currently needing :(

I started knitting last year with a project with work. I worked with older people and we were only knitting squares, so they showed me how to do a basic square. Then I went months without doing anything, but started going to a knitting group to keep me busy while I wait for my visa. They helped me get started again, and now I am in the middle of making a throw for the couch. It's actually very therapeutic! I use YouTube to help when there's no group that week. I panicked when I got to the end of a ball of yarn  but YouTube helped with that!
