Fresh fish man?
« on: April 07, 2016, 10:35:11 AM »
I just answered the door bell to a guy asking if I wanted to buy fresh fish. :o

Is that a thing? Like the milkman?

We have a fish man.  :D  He comes to the corner of the street and peeps his horn at the same time every week. We don't eat a lot of fish  but when I do buy it, I get it from him.

I'm not sure about London but I saw a TV program about Smithfield.  A guy would buy loads of meat and then sell it out of a cooler to individual customers in London.  He did very well.  Maybe your guy visits Billingsgate and does the same thing?

Good to know.

We're vegetarian so we won't be buying any fish, but DH thought maybe it was like the 'wallet inspector man' (scam). ::)

This has happened a few times to me too and I was kind of weirded out. Maybe it's super fresh and delicious but I am skeptical about buying fish from some random guy at my door.

I agree, you can't be too careful these days.  :)

I don't like anyone knocking and selling.

True.  :) Luckily we rarely get any of that where we are.

Do you have one of those little signs at your door?  ;)

Our council actually sent them around to everyone as we experienced a wave of scammer types targeting older folk.

I have been meaning to stick it up, but keep forgetting.

I'm definitely not a fan of doorstoppers.

We get a lot so I usually just avoid the bell... but I'm awaiting not one, but two deliveries (yippee!) so I got all excited... until I heard they were just selling fish. :\\\'(

I get wrong-footed by randomness...and so many times with the doorbell, it just ends up being something off-kilter enough to throw me.

The last time was a young lady selling "original artwork". I hear the bell and grumble over and open the door and she hits me full-on with an energetic sales pitch. "Aren't these colours wonderful?" She's looking past me, "Oh they will go so well with your couch!"

I had been watching The Martian and was sort of caught up wondering if you could really make water out of hydrogen fuel, so it took me several seconds to figure out what she was getting at.

I sort of have a soft spot for artists too.

So yes, if you are expecting the delivery of an end table and the guy says, "No, but I have a nice fresh haddock," I can see where that might be a bit much.

We have a basic rule - never buy anything at the door. The fish guy with a regular round who comes on the street is a slightly different animal - I *might* try that if I was satisfied with the sanitation and product quality, but anyone else - no.

Having said that, DH won't even buy an ice-cream from any of the vans in the summer time. He just says "where do they use the toilet if caught short, and how do they wash their hands?" Valid points, I think...  ;)

Goodness gracious, y'all! My cousin sold vegetables and fruit door-to-door after his divorce. He didn't complain about the loss of his wife's income and went to work instead. That door-to-door business paid for his kid's sports activities and his college! The fish guy and the ice cream guy or anyone who sells anything door-to-door are trying to make a living. It takes a STRONG person to do that. Especially when they're dealing with people who are rude as can be!

Well Lorena, if you accomplish nothing else today, you've got me feeling like a four star a-hole.

I applaud the efforts of anyone trying to make a living, and good luck to them.

I no longer buy fish in Morrison's because the fish counter at my local store has begun to smell, and the very small print on far too many of the selections says "previously frozen". I have no issues with frozen fish, but I want to know how long it's been 'on the ice' since taken from the freezer. Our local Tesco is even worse - no way would I buy 'fresh' fish there, because it obviously isn't fresh.

We have a 'fish van' in the local market. Fish is on ice, but uncovered. Flies are everywhere - even in the winter, so no thank you, not buying there.

We do have a fantastic fishmonger, in a purpose built shop. You walk in and it smells....of the sea, not fishy. Great selection, and the sanitation is spot on.

We don't go into a tirade when someone knocks on the door - we just say no thanks. If they try to argue, and 'get the foot in the door', well, we may be a bit rude at that point as we close the door.

Again - this is a personal decision, and it is right for us.

Wouldn't buy anything from someone on the doorstep - on principle.  My father put up a sign our our front door saying:  No solicitors.   ;D
