everyday I hear the mail come through it startles me.

It's obtrusive!

I have only been here since the end of Feb. 2016, but I also came from California. As such, I miss:

- everyday conveniences like shopping after work if I need to (we commute about an hour each way to/from work so not always ideal to grab anything mid-week) and Petsmart being a quick call away to get my dog booked in for grooming or day care/day camp -- and even if that one was full, getting to call the next Petsmart in the next city over that's just 5 minutes down the road. I also miss Target.

- food. Particularly Mexican, but some of the Asian cuisines too. Also, strawberries. But props to the English curries, though. I've taken to trying to make some Mexican food at home, but avocados here are more creamy so my guac, while awesome, is a bit different.

I like that I can get to a lot of places via the train here, and that whenever I order things like clothes online they come really quickly! I like having varied weather and green surroundings here, and I love not dying of heat all the time. I also love the cheese selection here, but was surprised when the butcher told me that they'd been out of skirt steak for weeks because it was discontinued for some unknown reason. I love the variety of crisps available here, but miss American Cheetos haha... Don't know about the medical stuff yet, but I will say I was alarmed that the dentist basically just did a quick looksee in my mouth, asked about my diet, and sent me on my way. I asked about a dental cleaning and learned that I needed to book the hygienist separately haha... so that was different--old habits die hard and all...

I once went to the dentist and asked about a cleaning. He looked at me strangely and said "Umm...That's YOUR job" and proceeded to show me how I should be brushing my teeth like I was a child. I didn't appreciate it to be honest. Obviously I take care of my teeth all I can (No cavities or anything - I was there initially because of wisdom teeth!) and think I do a very good job at it but I went every six months for a good clean and fluoride treatment. Not here, apparently!

I'm British born and bred and I don't think I've ever had a cleaning in my life. I don't think my regular dental check-ups have ever taken more than 5-10 minutes.

Are you meant to go regularly Ksand? It seems to be more encouraged with children then just as needed as adults. Growing up in the US it was every six months and I think the same as an adult. I went every six months anyways but it was more for a deep cleaning with fluoride treatment, and once in awhile I would have those unpleasant xrays. Seems very thorough looking back though!

I can't get my head around this either, my mom worked in the dental field and I literally cringed today when I found out my five year old step daughters never seen a dentist.  Every six months deep clean with fluoride. Bad dental care can lead to other health problems.  Plus your teeth feel so good after. One thing I won't compromise here lol I need my cleanings!

It depends when my dentist wants to see me again. Lately it's been once a year, sometimes it's 6 months. She's always said I have good oral/dental hygiene though.

I have to admit that I haven't been for about 18 months though... partly because I live 180 miles away from my dentist and it's awkward trying to schedule an appointment as I don't always know when I will be available, and also, I've been spending 3-5 months a year out of the country for the last 3 years (and will continue to do so for the next 2 years), so it's not easy to fit in the appointments :P.

Actually, I should go soon, because I won't have access to dental care for 3 months at the end of the year, and need to make sure there are no issues with my teeth.

I literally cringed today when I found out my five year old step daughters never seen a dentist.

Seriously? Wow - my mum always made sure we went to the dentist regularly when we were kids.

I had to go every 6 months as a child and as an adult. Deep clean, with the flouride and all that... the scraping and everything. I'm so alarmed not to have it and probably so conditioned that I can't believe I might actually elect to do it here on my own every 6 months.

I'm not super great at flossing each day, but perhaps I will improve... (unlikely)

It's called a 'scale and polish', not a 'cleaning'!
I get mine done once a year, usually seeing the hygienist immediately after the dentist check-up appointment.  (so when booking the appointment, I tell them I need a double appointment -- one with the dentist and one with the hygienist.)

Yes Ksand, I was alarmed. I told my husband that wasn't ok, and had a talk with mum. Just so she even understand dental hygiene -make sure everything's ok.

I've gone every six months for as long as I can remember.  I get a scale and polish about once a year and the dentist does it as part of the check-up.

If I may ask, how much is something like that? I would assume it isn't anything covered even partly by the NHS as an optional treatment.

Very cheap but lots of disclaimers like "if needed" "as appropriate."

My dentist does it if I ask her!

Ah yea it says "if clinically needed". I'm just so use to having it done. I didn't depend on it, obviously I do what I can to take care of my teeth between visits but it was nice to have that deep clean and fluoride.

I didn't realize it would be part of that first band too. When I went and paid and asked for that, my dentist looked absolutely baffled that I would ask such a thing haha need a new dentist!
