Medical Records from US
« on: May 09, 2016, 04:06:33 PM »
So I've finally arrived here in the UK, (South London) and am about to register with a local doctor, because I have a few regular medications I need and want to ensure I can get prescriptions for those medications. I went to the office my husband is registered at, got the registration packet, and they asked me about previous medical records. I only had insurance back in California steadily for the last year or so, and saw a few different doctors, and had a recent surgery, and so the records are scattered between several practices, although my last primary care doctor has most of it. How easy or hard did others find it to register with a practice, especially having any chronic health issues that required regular medication? Any tips or advice is appreciated. Thank you.

I had no problems registering at all, and I was/am still on loads of medications originally prescribed to me in the US (severe allergies, asthma, hypothyroid, acid reflux).

I had all my records with me from my various doctors and specialists like my allergist but I found my first GP wasn't all that interested in them. Instead they had me bring in all my current medication and they just looked up everything and prescribed it to me here. It was super easy.

Granted every GP is different so YMMV. They might want to retest you for certain things just to confirm your dosages  and whatnot, but my doctor in the US did the same thing periodically anyway.

I just went in with my medication packets, and came out with a repeat prescription for them. It shouldn't be difficult, but you may find that some medications aren't available and an alternative will be prescribed.

You'll most likely have no problems getting registered, and even if you do, that wont keep you from getting the drugs you require.  I have been trying to register for about 6 months and for some reason the NHS is having issues with me.  I still get my Metformin every month, however; I just have to pay for it.
