Dialing up from a PowerBook in the UK
« on: November 17, 2004, 01:10:07 PM »
Dear all

I just moved to the UK from the US, and am having trouble dialing up my new UK ISP (SurfAnytime) using the internal modem (v.92) on my 15” G4 PowerBook. After the initial set-up, I tried dialing up using the line from my BT phone (just plugged it into the PB), and the modem said it was connecting for some time, but then it disconnected and gave me a message that it could not detect a dial tone. I checked the phone line on my phone and I heard the dial tone, so that seemed weird.

Do any of you have any idea what may be going on here? Do I need a different cable to connect my modem to the phone line in the UK?
Is this a known problem with SurfAnytime and Macs (doesn’t seem like it would, but who knows)

Any help and insight would be appreciated. Thanks!!!
Ness

It could just be the setting of what "kind" of dial tone that your modem is recognising?

Yeah, I tried both the 'tone' and 'pulse' settings in the modem set-up but that didn't make a difference  :\\\'(

Well, that was the best I could come up with.  Sorry.

We have many more technological people here so I'm sure one will jump in and be able to help!

Doesn't SurfAnytime have customer support? I have an iBook and had no trouble with my dial-up.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Don't call BT as they are useless at tech support. They are useless overall in my opinion.

My bf had a similar problem with his mom's laptop but I was able to tweak a few things and it's working. Try this...........

Go to control panel and click on phone and modem options.
After that click the modem tab
Click properties
You'll see another modem tab there
Change the maximum port speed to 9600

This should help. For some reason their servers don't always recognise the modem speeds on all laptops. Mine was fine, yet the one my bf's mother was using was not. Changing this did the trick.

Let me know if this helped

Forgot to also add in the same place as the speed, change the modem volume all the way up. That helps the BT server to connect as well

Good luck!
