What's the gift they give to you? I understand it is "appropriate tot he region" so you each might have received something different?

Hi everyone :)

It went well. The two women organising it were super nice and it was a nice ceremony. It was held in a lovely, big room. There were 18 people from 12 different countries being naturalised and maybe 40 or so guests. The organiser made a welcome speech and the mayor made a speech. We all said our names individually, then said the oaths together (the ones who made an oath to God went together and the ones who made a non-religious affirmation went together). When we were called up to receive our certificate, we were also given a letter from Teresa May, instructions on how to apply for a British passport and our gift, which was a passport holder. (I had already bought one so I'll give this one to my hubby because it is black. Mine is lavender. :D ) We were also given a little British flag. Afterward there was tea, OJ and water and the mayor took pics with everyone individually.

The only thing that marred the ceremony was the fact that someone let their toddler yell, cry, talk loudly and run around the place (even up and down the center aisle and across the front during the mayor's speech). It was very distracting; I could hardly hear the speeches and I could tell the organiser and the mayor were annoyed.

What was bizarre is that there was a couple who used to live on our street there, as he was being naturalised as well. We had no idea, as we haven't seen them in a long time.

Later hubby and I went out to dinner and I am well and truly stuffed. I took a day off from my diet today. :D

That's cool. My husband got a "medal" (a coin in a box) with the crest of the city on it. Your gifts sound more useful!

Mine was a paperweight that says "Bath and North East Somerset Council, presented to mark the occasion and welcome you as a British citizen"

I got a key fob with a Union Jack and a lapel pin Union Jack.  I appreciate that we're all into this austerity thing, and I hate the fact that the local council are threatening to close some libraries, but I did pay 80 fecking quid for the ceremony! I think at that price, there should be a national minimum gift value of a coffee mug valued at £1.50 or greater. I'm sure my items totaled up to nor more than 75p.

Yeah, we were asked to leave our papers with the words to God Save the Queen and the oath/affirmation on our seats when we left - even the paper on which they printed our names. Not sure why, about that one. It would have been nice to have a copy of the affirmation I made.  :-\\\\

I thought my gift wasn't bad and at least it was practical. I dunno about those lapel pins, sjb - they were selling them in Brid for £4.95 and at a car boot last weekend for £4!

That must have been nice to carry around with you afterwards! It would be interesting to see what different places gave. Ours was in Bristol. A picture I googled showed the coin out of the box but I couldn't remove it when I tried.

A mug would be useful or a pen, everyone needs one of those right?

In America I got a mini flag and a letter from the president  ;)

Fallgal it was good to read your experience. I want a lovely passport holder too! Also, I cannot stand bratty, rude children and their stupid parents! I just hope they have fans running. These interiors over here about cook me. I turned the a/c on in my US house when it got 75 degrees indoors.

Did you  say Bridlington?

The closer you are to British citizenship, the more kids irritate you.
I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC
