Tax Refunds
« on: July 11, 2016, 10:29:27 AM »
Hello, friends!

We have just received my wife's federal and state tax refunds, but they have sent us checks. Can we cash them here in the UK? We are a little puzzled by this. Thank you for all of your help.

I don't know if you can cash US checks here but if you find out that you can't, try asking your US bank if they accept checks for deposit by mail, mine (WFB) does.

In the past my UK bank (HSBC) has accepted a US check.

My US bank has mobile banking and I deposit checks with them that way.  Over the last couple of years paper checks have been sent to my US address while we have been traveling.  My son sent me a photo front and back and I was able to apply a signature to the rear using Adobe Reader and do a mobile deposit. (First time he did this I printed out the images, and signed the back before doing the mobile deposit)

Thanks, guys! I was just wondering what to do if we haven't got a US bank? My wife canceled her account in America when she moved here.

So I guess you are left with calling round the banks in the UK to see if they can help or possibly endorsing the check over to a parent or other trusted person in the US to cash for you?

Be sure to ask about any fees involved with the former.

You will be able to deposit the check into your UK bank account, but the exchange rate and fees may not be the best. You might have to speak to the manager or other senior person to get this done as tellers do not often come across anything out of the ordinary.

So I was curious myself and called one of my banks, Halifax.

I was told that they do accept checks in USD but you have to have an account with them, it takes longer to clear and there is a fee involved.
If the amount is less than 100gbp equivalent, then a flat fee of 5gbp applies.
For amounts over 100gbp equivalent there is an 0.25% commission charge with a minimum of 8gbp an a max of 80gbp.

I would assume from that that many of the other banks will have similar arrangements in place.

Barclays does as well...and you can walk up to the teller as they know what to do. There are interchange fees (which would apply anywhere here).  You shouldn't have any issues.

We got US checks for a wedding present and the bank cashed them, for a fee, and they took a while to clear, but all was fine, no questions asked.

This will make it very inconvenient for her to pay the IRS in future years.
