Recommend a movie for 13 year old girl's birthday party
« on: July 15, 2016, 03:07:12 PM »

Quickly please, the party is tomorrow night

I'm trying to challenge them a bit.  I've already suggested The Matrix and Flashdance.

Last birthday I strongly suggested the Daryl Hannah/ Tom Hanks mermaid movie and they hated it.

Ideas?

Is pretty in pink good? Appropriate?

Another birthday it was 10 things I hate about you, which my daughter liked but her thickish friends couldn't understand...

Josh: Do you have any idea what you're talking about?
Cher: No. Why, does it sound like I do?

My favourite Clueless exchange:

Cher: I'm captain of the Pismo Beach disaster relief.
Mel: I don't think they need your skis.
Cher: Daddy, some people lost all their belongings. Don't you think that includes athletic equipment?

I'm gonna go with 90s recommendations, since I turned 13 in 1996 :P:

I LOVE Clueless... it was my favourite movie when I was 12 (I can quote pretty much the entire movie).

I also loved Baz Lurhmann's Romeo and Juliet.

Then there was 10 Things I Hate About You, She's All That, Bring It On, 13 Going on 30, Galaxy Quest, Empire Records etc.

Oooh, 13?! Such a fun age. Wanting to be a grown up, but so not anywhere near close. haha.

Ferris Buellers day off. Might be a bit old for them. Pitch Perfect (if they like singing, it's funny, set in college though).

I second Clueless, it's fun. But again, might not translate well since it's over 20 years old...

These would totally work:
Mean girls
Easy A (it's a take on the Scarlet Letter, it's really funny)
Bring it on
Princess Diaries (I loved it and still love it!)
Warm Bodies (zombies, but it's cute and funny and not scary, take on Romeo and Juliet)

I just realised, these are all set in America. Sorry, I don't really know any British ones...

Maybe St Trinian's (2007)? It's a public all girls school with cliques and all.
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

Dionne: Phat! Did you write that?
Cher: Duh. It's like a famous quote.
Dionne: From where?
Cher: Cliff's Notes.

Keep them coming, those are great ideas.  My daughter has watched pitch perfect 500 times

I'm British, but pretty much all the movies I watched as a teenager were American :P.

The only British ones that come to mind are:
- Four Weddings and a Funeral
- Notting Hill
- Bridget Jones' Diary
- Love Actually
- Bend It Like Beckham

Of topic, but I used to work with a girl who was friends with Alicia Silverstone.  She said that they were all friends with Carl Sagan's daughter.  Apparently Carl Sagan was a massive pot head and they all got high frequently.

If I ever smoked with Alicia Silverstone and Carl Sagan I wouldn't be able to speak!

Clueless is seeming like a good choice.   It just dawned on me that they may not want me to watch it with them

- Bridget Jones' Diary

Too mature, I don't want to have to answer any awkward questions

Oh, yeah - sorry, I was just listing British movies that I can remember from the 1990s/early 2000s, not necessarily movies that might be suitable (I almost put Trainspotting on there too).

I don't think Four Weddings would be suitable either, or Love Actually - also pretty mature :P. Then again, I saw Four Weddings for the first time when I was 12, along with Seven and Scream (both of which are rated 18) :P.
