US Bank for a US Citizen with no US address
« on: August 25, 2016, 04:50:07 PM »
Dear Group,

I am sorry if this has been asked before. Is there an expat bank in the US which does not require an outrageous balance or US address? I've seen some which equate expat=multi-millionaire.

I'm a UK resident shortly to have UK citizenship (just sent off the application) and have no residence in the US nor have I had for 10 years.

However, it looks like I may be inheriting property in the US and in any event, I will be going back a bit more. My spouse (UK citizen) and I are even considering a house in the states (distant future).

So, the eternal trouble of needing dollars in the US or the necessity of paying for something in the US without a credit card/PayPal keeps presenting itself.

Can you get a US bank without a US address, any recommendations or how do you manage it?

Many thanks,

I started a joint savings account with my dad. Minimum balance of $200 or $300. My dad is still US resident... so maybe that was why it was easy. It's with Bank of America.

Mostly it's because I have a couple US investments that were given to me when I was born and every once in awhile I get a check sent, so need somewhere to deposit it!

I opened a US bank account when I was living in the US as a student - when I moved home to the UK, they said it was fine to change my address to my UK address.

However, I discovered that my address was half cut-off on my bank statements and as a result i wasn't receiving any of them. So, I changed the account address to my aunt's address in the US so my mail wouldn't get lost anymore.

Lots of US websites only accept US billing addresses, and when making online purchases your billing address has to match what is associated with your card by the bank.

At one point I changed the address the bank had to a UK one but quickly found I couldn't make purchases on some US websites because I couldn't enter the billing address, making it useless.

So now the address is a friend's or relative's and I receive electronic statements.

Assuming you are a US citizen:

from ACA (American Citizens Abroad);

"ACA has teamed up with the State Department Federal Credit Union to provide SDFCU accounts for Americans residing abroad. This is the same type of account used by Americans working at US embassies, as well as many other people around the world.  You can reside full-time or part-time abroad and still qualify. You don’t have to have an address in the US. You don’t have to be connected in any way with the Federal Government.

To join ACA, go to "Join Now" on the ACA website and Membership Levels and Benefits are explained there. You will receive a confirmation email upon completion of your ACA membership. Then, to open your ACA/SDFCU account, go directly to the SDFCU website here to join or select the green "Join" button on the SDFCU homepage. If you are living overseas, be sure to select "Overseas Applicant" from the list. Again, detailed information and step-by-step guidance are provided."

Membership fee for ACA is $70, but it's rumoured you do not have to be a member of ACA to create an account with SDFCU. Try giving SDFCU a call?

Thank you, that is perfect! I have no close family so I'd be stretching it with a second cousin to borrow an address and would rather have an account with my UK address. It looks really promising.
