Why no screens in the windows???
« on: September 13, 2016, 10:20:27 PM »
This is making life miserable. It's bad enough being with out air con in the summer but it's been warm and with out the windows open it's awful. Due to no screens my flat is full of flies and spiders. (not to mention extra dirt and dust) What does everyone do to keep the bugs out?

No idea why we don't have window screens... though it might be because most of our windows open outwards, so a screen wouldn't work? (just a thought - no clue if that's the reason or not)

To be honest, I've never considered the need for them here, since we don't usually get mosquitoes or other nasty bugs like you get in parts of the US - sure, I might get the odd bee or wasp come though, or maybe a spider or an occasional fly, but I don't see enough of them to really bother me... and if one does come in, I either wait for it to fly back out again, or I try to catch it or swat it away.

I grew up in the UK and I found it really odd when I first went to the US that people would put screens on their windows... it felt to me like that defeated the object of having a window, since I like to open my windows wide and lean out to take in the fresh air :P.

My cats do quite a good job of catching any bugs that venture inside!  ;D

You can get screens here if you want them.

Just looked up Window Screens on Wikipedia to see if there was a reason why we don't have them here in the UK.

Looks like window screens were invented in the US, and they are only routinely used on windows in the US, Canada and Australia... so seems like the rest of the world doesn't bother with them, at least not as a standard fitting in all homes.

For the same reason they don't have snow blowers here. It's a matter of need vs function.  There are a lot fewer flying critters here vs the cost/impact visually.

I do understand the want of them. it's a bit of a security blanket in terms of things coming in.

Just not much of an issue. We do get a few flies in...but not enough to drive us nuts. Nothing stops spiders from getting in.....they seem to pop up magically out of the walls. Screens don't stop dust. I foolishly didn't shut the windows (with screens) once when the wind kicked up real good back in the US......looked like I set a fire in the house there was so much dust. Now if we had a mosquito issue.....I'd do whatever I had to to stop those bastards.

If, as predicted, our climate warms, there may be a good business opportunity....ACME Screens.
I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

As I said in the first post we are having a massive issue with bugs, spiders, flies, mayflies, and for some reason lots of pillbugs. It's just a bit baffling to me as there are obviously plenty of bugs coming in and a screen is such a very simple thing. A screen is fantastic as it lets all the fresh air you like in with no bugs :)

No, as I said in the first post, definitely a massive bug issue going on. There's a need.

Been an issue for us, and my husband is British. His solution is to keep the windows closed but on warm days with no AC it's horrible. (not a big fan of the heat, luckily there's not too many hot days though). We just get so many bugs in.

Screens stop some dust I find, downside is they do have to be cleaned (which isn't so fun!)

Yeah I'm grateful there's not really many mosquitos here. I've only seen them a couple of times but back in Cleveland there were sooo many. I don't miss them at all haha

I'm right there with you on the bug problem. Some mozzies, some flies, a few randoms and a handful of pillbugs.

The biting insects seem to love me, so I keep a fan on my at night (they can't fly through the wind).

I wish we had screens, but we're in a rented flat, so it'd be temporary. Maybe when we buy a house I'll convince DH to get them fitted.

Same on the biting insects! It was the same in the states, I always had so many mosquito bites. Not as many bites here luckily. We're not in a big city and near a lot of trees and such, so more bugs. Same on the rented flat. Probably a good 4-5 years from getting a house. Someday! :)

Yup we get LOADS of bugs in our house.  We are in the process of getting new windows and are having screens (fitted by Streme).

The dust is mainly due to no hvac systems.  We plan to add an extension in a few years and on my wish list is an hvac system.  It'll probably be insanely expensive but I'd like it!

Oh nice!!! Hope the new windows and screens will be good :D

THAT makes so much sense! I wondered why every room both flats I've lived in get dusty sooo much faster than my really old house in the USA. I thought when we moved to a new flat, "sweet, less dusty!" It's a newer place but man even the bathroom is super dusty an hour after I clean. That and I have allergies so I always feel like I have a cold. It's gotta be the dust.
