Will my offer's salay be sufficient to live in central london?
« on: October 02, 2016, 12:42:29 PM »
I have recently been given a job offer and wondering if my salary of 4300GBP per month as a consultant will be sufficient considering a mid-level life? I have never lived in the UK before.

£43,000 a year or £4,300 a month?

What kind of lifestyle do you have now or hope to have when you are here?  How far of a commute, what kind of neighbourhood?  By yourself or a family?  Roommates?  Travel expectation?

Per month. Sorry that I didn't explain enough.

I live by myself, I prefer a small flat over having a roommate. My lifestyle is normal, focusing on work during the weekdays and having a drink in the weekend. However, I eat quite often outside, and normally don't cook. I've read food in London is expensive.

As for commute, my work office is in Chelsea, I don't mind commuting with bus not more than 20-30 minutes.

I think you'll be fine.  Your take home pay will be about £3,000 a month depending on how much you put towards pension and you take private medical, dental, or travel insurance plans.

You would be approved to rent an apartment up to £1,720/a month.
Council tax will be roughly £100
Gas/Electric £60
Water £35
TV/Broadband £60
Mobile phone £35
Transportation costs £100

Have a look at Rightmove.co.uk and see what apartments you like/don't like.  I personally couldn't live in a studio, though you could save money.  I would have to have a one bedroom.  Though a loft/style studio can be nice and you could save money.

I'm not going to lie, since moving here I went from eating out every meal to eating out 2 times a month.  My lifestyle has drastically changed since moving here.  (I don't live in London).

I see you are coming here from Hong Kong.  I imagine things will feel like a bargain after that - possibly with the biggest change being how much more expensive it is to eat out here.

The bus can take ages in the rush hours, and you could possibly get more space for the cash if you took the tube a little further out into Zone 2. I would also suggest Open Rent to find non-agency, private landlord rented accommodation to avoid a lot of the rental agency nonsense and cost.
