As Michele slowly packs up her life in the US and prepares for a life in rural Northumberland, I often think of how difficult it is for her to give up so much and start afresh in a strange land :)
It set me thinking about what I would miss if it was the other way around and what I would be looking forward to.
What I would miss:-
1) sunday lunch - roast beef, roast potatoes, yorkshire puddings and lashings of gravy made from the beef fat - all followed by a lovely apple crumble and custard - washed down with either a beer or bottle of wine mmmmm

2) Being able to smoke hand rolled cigarettes made from golden virginia (you dont seem to have it in the US)

3) My family and friends - our get-togethers - visits to the local pub for a pint and a bar meal. Also the typically english countryside (ok, I know I'm cheating a bit with all these as number 3)

What I would look forward to:-

1) Being with Michele and among her family and friends

2) The 'laid back' and informal way of life of Americans

3) Hot dry weather and owning a big truck :)

For those who have moved to England and those who have moved to the US, What are your 3 likes and dislikes ?
Lets see how common they are or even how different they are.

I hope it is ok that I start this one going...  I guess it would seem right since Tom is my fiance...

What will I miss in America...3 most things...

1.  I will miss the summertime by the bay and friends gathering to eat crabs and drink beer.

2.  I will miss being able to visit my family and friends when ever I had the chance to...  to pick up the phone without a thought since I have a great long distance plan.

3.  My Truck....  Oh will I miss my Toyota pickup...  he has been a faithfull and wonderful truck...  First brand new vehicle I ever owned that I could call my own.  Has taken me many places and seen many new things.

What I look forward to:

1.  Waking up every morning and knowing that I will be able to greet Tom... making up for all the time together we have lost... keeping the darn computer turned off...  LOL! knowing our words will not be minced by netmeeting.

2.  The beautiful English countryside on the back of Tom's motorbike (when he gets new one)  or on my own bike.  Seeing all the charming villages that surround us during their festivals I hear so much about.

3.  Meeting new family and friends, as well as being around some old friends that live nearby...and learning the cultures.

I believe the three things I will miss the most in the US will be:

*Mild winters and lots of sunshine
*Being close enough to my daughter's apt. to drive over in 15 mins.
*Stores being open until 9:00 pm

What I look forward to in the UK:

*Going to bed and waking up with my Keith every day instead of having to say our goodnights over the phone. ;)
*The beautiful countryside and lovely town I'll be living in.
*Going into London to some of my favorite places and going out for a curry afterwards  ::) Yummmmmm

Life should NOT be a journey to the
grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well
preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand,
wine in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and
screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"

Adding my 2 cents :).  I'd like to answer for my hubby since he is the one that moved to the States.

Likes........
Mild winters
Warm weather
Big movie theaters

Dislikes......
Hot Texas summers
The people that think it's "cute" to make fun of his accent
Being away from his family

Since we plan to move to the UK.....these are my answers

Likes......
The weather (as in cooler summers)
The scenery
Being closer to his family (mine are deceased)

Dislikes.....
The wet and cold
Stores that aren't open 24 hrs
The pay for nurses over there is worse than here (as is my understanding)

I'm sure there are many other things we could have listed but those were the first ones to come to mind.

I will miss about America:

24-hour stores
Target (right there with ya kcg!)
Coke (always tastes different in England, to me)

What I won't miss:

The HEAT & almost constant Florida SUN (I turn tomato red in the heat..not pretty.  In England, I develop that lovely "peaches & cream" complexion)
Loud, pumping bass music
The unbelievable rudeness of people here

And what I can't wait for in England:

Pubs
the weather, and winters
Beautiful scenery
Mass transit, and sightseeing
History all around me(I know thats more than 3..sorry...just so excited!)

I'm new here but I thought this was a good topic to post on.  I'm in the US, he's in the UK...

The things I'd miss about America:

1.)  My family and loved ones
2.)  Good proper Mexican food  ;)
3.)  Familiarity of culture.. just knowing the social references

What I'd look forward to in England:

1.)  The WEATHER!!!  I've lived in a desert for 22 years and wouldn't miss it for a second.. I adore cold gray skies and rain!!!
2.)  The ability to walk everywhere or use decent mass transit and really see the country
3.)  Feeling safer.. having more security

Oh I could go on and on......  ::)

After 5 years in the UK, the 3 things I miss the most about the US:

1.  Decent size appliances.  What I wouldn't give for an extra large Kenmore washing machine and dryer.  Unfortunately, I wouldn't have any where to put it!  Which leads me to number two ...

2.  Space, glorious space.

3.  Food:  Maryland Blue Crabs, shrimp, A1, Mircale Whip, Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup, and good ole' Greensboro scrapple.

What I'd miss if I were to leave:

1.  Football.  Never watched sports in the US, but love UK football.

2.  The quirky sense of English humour.

3.  A decent pint.

Oh yeah, man!  I totally forgot about this one!  I have no idea HOW I forgot, but I will not miss that at all!

Sorry, were we only supposed to put three?  Typical New Yawka' -- too loud and can't shut the **** up. ;)

LOL, from what I have been told by my loving man...  they have this loud pumping bass music in England also...  but I doubt as bad as here...errrrr!  Definitely will not miss that late at night while trying to sleep.

There's no Chicken Noodle Soup?  How do they warm up in that rain and wind?  Oh NO!!!  Guess that's one more food item I have to add to my list of things to take with me!

With potato and leek soup.  Just as nice, but certainly not the same.

Wait...you have loud pumping bass music MORE here than you do in the U.S....and as for rudeness!  Honey, I GOTTA tell you....Californians have NOTHING on the English for rudeness.  Nothing at ALL.  I think the English are the rudest people I've ever encountered and I'd like to move back to the U.S. to get away from them...AND their loud pumping bass music!

Um.....rude people are everywhere and so is loud music unless of course you live out in the sticks with acres of land and not a body in sight.  If that is your cup of tea then good for you....I prefer towns and cities.

Stacey you must be hanging out in the wrong dang places...I found most in the UK to be exceedingly polite to the point of frustration.  (With the exception of a few drunk teens/people -but that's a global phenomena).

I think what SAF meant by rude was more along the lines of the "in your face" attitude of many in the US....which depending on your cultural background can be seen as brash and offensive.  Maybe not though....

Have to run to work now so will add more about likes and dislikes later.  ;D

Where in CA are you from, Stacey?  And have you ever visited Miami in the middle of a heat wave? ;D

What I meant by rudeness was, the way the checkout person at the drugstore will not only not look at you, they will not speak to you.  They just hold out there hand for the money and expect you to read the total off the register.  What I meant was, the way they give you dirty looks for no reason at all, or refuse to open doors for you, or won't smile at you, or tell you to f*** off if you ask for the time, or cut you off in traffic and then give you the finger.  I've never seen any of this in England.

As for the loud bass, again...I can only say I didn't notice it there nearly as much as here, where you can't stop at a traffic light without getting a headache from it, and where you're regularly woken up in the middle of the night by it.

Maybe I just haven't been to Yorkshire (I mean, not maybe I haven't, because I definitely haven't.)  I mean, maybe they're ruder there than in the places I've been in the UK.

1. Having electrical outlets in the bathroom..
2. Mountain Dew...gotta have it.(as well as other food items)
3. Large appliances...and space
4. Wal Mart...24 hours

Things I won't miss in the US
1. My job....(I love what I do, it's a long story)
2. The rushed hustle and bustle of every day life

Things I can't wait for
1. Spending every day seeing the smile on My Boyfriends face and hearing him tell me about how his day has been when he comes home from work...
2. The feeling of being "Home" when I am there with him and his family.
3. All the wonderful neighbors and friends that I have had the priviledge of meeting and developing relationships with. We now have to communicate through the postal service instead of over a cup of tea.
