In The Meantime [emoji1323]
« on: October 14, 2016, 05:25:03 PM »
I know all of us are suffering from being away from our loved ones while waiting for our visas to be approved. I thought maybe we could have an area to post what is taking our mind off it?
Favorite binge worthy tv shows to recommend?
Books and the like?

I am currently just now jumping on the "Downton Abbey" train and loving it! Also "Humans" on Amazon Prime is worth the watch.
Books I've just finished- "Howls Moving Castle" by Diana Wynne Jones and The "Good Luck of Right Now" by Matthew Quick.

I know this wait is disheartening but these forums have really been encouraging to me. I've even met another girl waiting for her fiancé visa- we realized we live in the same town and got together for some wine to moan about the visa process!

Let's encourage and build each other up!

Jess

I luv Downtun Abbey! Fav movie recently watched has got to be Brooklyn, must watch!

I agree, it's disappointing but maybe we can discuss things like this to stay uplifted:)

I was also thinking maybe we can talk about which area we will be in once in the UK? I also have some qs about the job market etc..

Absolutely!
My husband and I will be living in Manchester.
My husband is originally from the Preston area and when I've visited throughout our dating, its always been staying more in the village areas, which I love but I am beyond excited to be living and working in the city.

The job market for me might be a bit tricky- I studied American Sign Language and was working at a school for the deaf as a Dorm Teacher when I got engaged. But in the U.K. they use British Sign Language so my qualifications don't exactly transfer over.
But I'm looking at social work, and other educational positions.

Anyone have tips on finding a job as an expat?

Nice!

We'll be in Peterborough to begin with but eventually hope to move to London if possible.

I studied marketing and mass communications and worked for a publishing company here in the states that also has offices in Oxford. I was even called in for an interview a few months back for a Marketing Manager position but bc I wasn't there in person, they couldn't wait:(

Hey!

I just got my new job on Tuesday. 😁
I'm the new US copywriter for an international car accessories company.

Suggestions for getting a job in the UK are:
-translate your US skills into their UK equivalent
-get on the list of several recruitment agencies. You're looking and they're looking. You'll be twice as likely to get a job ASAP.
-UK employers can be hesitant to hire people without any UK work experience, it can take a little while to get a job.
- get your UK license as soon as you can, some employers only want to hire you if you can drive. It's really annoying.
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

I have been watching every show I can.  Poldark has new episodes and is great.

I'm moving to Ipswich initially but then were moving closer to my step children near Norwich, anywhere from diss to Norwich will be where we're looking.

I am a certified surgical technologist.  I work in retail bc I couldn't move ( fought with my ex husband in court, but won) so couldn't get a job in my chosen career.  On top of that they don't have that job in England techniqually.  It's either done by RNs or ODPs.  So either I'm going to try to get into an OR as some trainee (seen this position and talked to a recruiter who thought I might be able to get this job) or have to go to school again.  Not happy about that.  I hate retail and that's why I went back to school, don't want to do it in the uk just bc they don't recognize the schooling I've worked so hard for.

I moved December last year. I like it, the town has enough places to shop and eat and it's close enough to big cities that weekend trips are doable (however, the locals moan how bad it is). I think there's a good supply of jobs here too, I found one within weeks of searching, and found an even better one four months later.

I think housing is a tad expensive but it's still a lot cheaper than London.  There seems to be a lot of festivals/events that come through too. There was just a French market in town, which was cool. The weekend before was an international market.

Congratulations on your new job!

I would also recommend looking for recruitment nights by companies. I went to one for my current job even though I already had an interview scheduled. I think it helped me stand out a bit and explain my visa situation. I see recruitment events posted on social media a lot, so it's worth keeping your eyes peeled for these.

That sounds fun! As far as marketing, would you say there are a lot of opportunities in that specific field?

Thanks, Eh127929! It took a few months of searching. I'd been looking for 5 months, mainly for Marketing and PR positions. I'd been a Sales and Marketing/ Brand Marketing Assistant just prior.

And Mev33n have you tried looking online already? You may not be able to apply, but you can see what's available and see what skills they want you to have.
