Questions: First Taxes Filed Abroad
« on: November 09, 2016, 07:24:48 PM »
Hi everyone,

I apologize if this information is readily available somewhere else - I haven't been able to find a thorough guide, but if there is one, perhaps someone can direct me?

My husband and I got married on October 21st, and I'll be moving to the UK on November 19th. I'm not planning to start working until into the new year, as we've decided to enjoy each other's company and to help me get settled in over the holidays.

This means that for 2016, I will have only earned money in the U.S. I was low income and paying tuition, so it's likely I'll get a sizable refund if I file separately. However, I'll admit I'm completely in the dark about how to file taxes as a married person, let alone a person married to someone overseas. I would call an accountant around here, but I live in a rural area and have a feeling people who have a hard time answering my questions (I worked in Ireland for a semester and the accountants around here had no idea how to deal with that). Thus, this forum is a much better resource for me.

From what I've read on here so far, married but filing separately is probably my best option. I've read that the only money I'd have to declare related to my spouse is joint holdings, but we don't have a bank account or own a home together or anything like that yet. Am I right to assume it would only be my income I'd be filing for 2016? And also, it would probably be best to not open a joint account until January?

I'm working down a list of things I need to prepare and take care of before I leave the country, and this has been on my mind. Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks, everyone!

goldblend - your thinking sounds spot on. Do also think - if you own any investments at all - if these are, or are not, UK "tax friendly".

generally would agree that you should be filing married but filing separately. the implications of filing together mean that you would be bringing your spouse into the IRS' jurisdiction and he would have to begin reporting his worldwide assets and income to the IRS (which he would presumably not wish to do..)

But it can - just sometimes - save tax to elect to file jointly; even though this is unusual.
