Can I bring pickle to the UK?
« on: November 27, 2016, 02:11:54 PM »
Weird question, but I'm currently home at the moment and my brother got me four jars of pickles as a joke Christmas present. Does anybody know if I can bring a jar back to the Uk in my checked luggage? I'm struggling to find the answer and would hate to have them taken.

If it's in a commercially packaged jar, it should be fine.

See here:

(particularly the Exempted Food Products section near the bottom)

First hand information: Yes You Can. I have done it. You need to declare it in clear terms in your customs declaration and you need to use tight packaging and no leaks. For other items you should check it online because there are very strict controls on what food products you can bring into the EU.

Serious risk of breakage!  Is it really worth it?  I see plenty of pickles here.

Jim,  there are a lot of pickles brands but most of them are sweet, yuck.

Most of us want dills or kosher dills and I've only found one brand that is remotely affoldable. It's not 'right' but it's passable. Haha.

And yeah, I'd be worried about breakage as well. But people do bring wine/liquor bottles back and forth across the pond alright.
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

Update: I brought two jars, no breakage and customs kind of laughed when I enquiries about declaring them. They said we don't need to declare them just go through.  I packed each jar in a ziplock bag, then wrapped in a old towell, repeated and then put both in a big ziplock bag my mom had. Packed in between lots of clothes.

Such a shame, those jars could have been filled with grits!
