Applesauce
« on: December 09, 2016, 11:06:04 AM »
What do Brit's have against the deliciousness that is applesauce?

I found myself wanting some Mott's cinnamon applesauce the other day but it dawned on me that the only applesauce I have seen here are the pots for meat! Has anybody seen any individual pots like back home?

I use applesauce in baking as an egg replacer (I used to be vegan and DH's grandfather doesn't eat eggs). I've never found it in the UK so I just make my own.

Peel and cut some apples, rinse and drain them, put them in a pan on low-medium heat, cover and cook until soft. The water will come out of the apples as they get hot, so don't add extra. Mash and add sugar and cinnamon to taste.

That satisfies my applesauce cravings and it works for baking.

Baby food aisle.  It's not quite the same but if you add cinnamon it'll scratch the itch.

My local garden centre has it (Motts) in a small American food section.  I can send you some if you decide the ones here are no good.

I seem to remember they've got a wide selection in France, in these squeeze packs.

Is it terribly expensive?

I should probably learn to make it myself, but it was handy having those small pots.

If you do make a batch, you can freeze it in portions for whenever the craving hits.  ;)

Snap.

Easy enough to make too.

https://www.freshpreserving.com/applesauce-recipe-%7C-how-to-make-applesauce---ball-fresh-preserving-br1126.html will take you to a recipe I use - without the added sugar.  I also add a good tablespoon of a quality cinnamon.  Works well and really is easy.
