US qualified dividends as only income
« on: December 17, 2016, 07:17:08 PM »
Considering a move to the UK and am curious about how the UK would tax US qualified dividends as my only income.  I don't owe any US Federal tax on the income.

Would the UK also be taxing me on this income after I move to the UK?  Thanks a lot for any insight.

I think the U.K. are going to tax your dividends  should you return and it will depend on where they come from. If they come from individual stocks or HMRC reporting funds that are 100% equities then they should get the HMRC preferred tax rates.

If they are from mutual funds then the best you can hope for is that's they will be taxed as ordinary income.

We'll be filing our first HMRC returns next year and my wife's income is almost entirely dividends from Vanguard HMRC reporting ETFs and I am expecting very little in U.K. Taxes.

Before we moved back this year we converted our mutual funds to ETFs and put them all in my wife's name as I have pension income.

I assume you owe no tax on the US dividends because of your tax bracket. If you can get the UK personal allowances you will probably find that you UK tax bill is also low if this is your only income.
