Weekends away in the UK by train
« on: April 09, 2017, 07:10:55 PM »
My husband and I live in Canterbury and we just got the two together railcard.  I think we'd like to do a few weekends away now that we can save on the fare (and I haven't seen much of the country outside of London and Kent).  Where are your favorite places for a minibreak here?  We are thinking York at some point.  We enjoy walking, interesting food/drink, and museums.

York is awesome. I definitely suggest getting to Whitby, they have some amazing beaches and some lovely places to walk!
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

Cheddar Gorge, Bath (though crazy crowded), Oxford, Brighton, Stratford-upon-Avon, Windsor, Portsmouth

Lots more but those would each be very different to one another

Those all sound really nice!!  Brighton isn't far either, I bet we could go there without connecting in London.

I've been to Bath but not for years--would love to go again.  I'm a big Jane Austen fan.  Adding Windsor for SURE, I love visiting castles and things.  The castle in Canterbury is kind of pitiful in comparison.

There's a lot to Windsor too.  I'd highly recommend taking the Long Walk from Windsor Castle into Windsor Great Park.  Really fabulous.

We just went to Whitby a couple weeks ago! It was gorgeous, but SO crowded. It was the first nice weekend of the spring so I think everyone was eager to get out. We love York too, the train museum is great if you like that sort of thing.

York is fabulous and you can sometimes get great deals on Virgin tickets (first class for 20quid.  Windsor and Bath are also great.  I went to uni in Leicester so that holds a special place in my heart.  Nottingham was a nice day out.  If you are feeling really adventurous, Edinburgh is lovely.  I also really enjoyed visiting Cambridge and Oxford.

Edinburgh is a little far for a weekend trip, I think, but I think we're going in August for a few days!  I've been to the fringe a few times, but I liked the touristy things as well so we wanted to go there together.

You should try Rye, it's a lovely seaside town not far from you.

How about going to Ashford and taking the train to Paris or Bruge?  You are so close to the coast.

We went to Bristol last weekend, the waterside was great.  Perfect for a summer break.

Rye looks lovely!

I don't think the railcard applies to the Eurostar, does it?  We definitely want to but it's a lot more expensive than going somewhere in Britain, usually.

York as others have suggested!

Maybe Kendel in the lake district?

I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

The key to saving money on the Eurostar is to go off peak.  For the tunnel, Tesco loyalty points make it free.

Have you thought of joining the National Trust so you have something to do when you arrive?

I think we're actually leaning toward English Heritage membership because they own more of our local things to do.  Maybe both once I get a job.
