yeah its really scary without insurance. I got all my percriptions(asthma and birth control)  filled for 6 months before leaving Ireland. I couldn't ski or anything cause I was so scared about getting hurt!

but keep telling yourself it will be worth it soon. you have options like katoo says maybe urgent care now, paying a bit more now is better then ending up in the hospital and then having major bills. but like I said call the doctor and the hospital I'm sure someone can help you honestly!

sorry to hear you are feeling so badly. firstly most places will allow a payment plan so bankruptcy doesn't necessarily need to be the first option. plus you have to be resident in the country to do it, then its a waiting period for your creditors to respond and a court appearance and then another waiting period and then it happens.

if any of your creditors can prove fraud they have a strong case in court and you may not get the bankruptcy anyway. incuring the debt and then not making any payments on it would indeed look like fraud, so I would be very careful about how you handle it.

call the hospital or your doctor. explain the situation and they can either set up payment plans or give you options to help. one solution is if you have a good relationship with your gp they may be able to call you in some antibiotics without being seen if its a previous condition.

be positive! you have a lot of options!

also to answer your question about it following you... no not technically. I've moved to Ireland and had to start edit fresh there, and its the same for the uk starting again from scratch. however I have had friends who took out loans or opened a mortgage abroad be asked for a copy of their us credit report if they didn't have enough established credit..... so I guess it depends what you are going to do when.

You truly have never needed life-saving health care if you think that a payment plan would cover hospitalization and ER costs for sepsis. An estimate of the costs for sepsis treatment over a decade ago was $20K. No payment plan will be enough to cover that. If I go septic, I may die. Simple as that.

Of course I am getting treatment now but it is not working. I'm on a 24-hour watch right now.

I have though. my insurance didn't cover my shoulder surgery and the additional cost was about 45,000. lucky my parents helped with the payment plan. it sucks and its horrible, but I'm telling you call and talk to them ahead of time create a game plan and then you won't have to worry as much and can focus on taking care of yourself.

and good that you are getting treatment now! you are due some good luck so hopefully everything will be fine.

I have no answers to your questions, I'm just sad you are ill.  Im in the same insurance boat, and it is a worry.  I had a sinus infection about two weeks back, and went to an Urgent Care and paid cash for both the visit and the prescription over $200 just to get it wiped out so it wouldn't get worse.  So yeah, what if I get really sick is in the back of my mind all the time.  Keep us posted on how you are doing and I'll be sending my shiniest good thoughts.

Yeah, it is terrifying to live without health insurance. My medical bills already have wiped out the tiny savings fund I'd planned to put toward getting a car in the UK. The second urgent care visit, the doctor failed to get a culture so we are now a week behind in catching up with the infection. I'm on three antibiotics now and we're hoping one will work before things get worse. Hoping against hope that something will come through.

You better eat some good yogurt.  I had a cyst on my leg once that the culture showed mrsa, so I too, was on the wrong antibiotic.  It was Clindamycin that finally cleared it up.

Crossing fingers. Clindamycin is one of the three I got. Don't know if the yogurt I eat will help--it's flavored and sugared--but it's worth a try.

AV.. I am a Medical Laboratory Scientist so I'm curious as to what's going on with you. This may be a personal question but why are you worried about sepsis? Have you been septic before?  Feel free not to answer if that is too personal. Try to stay positive... It sounds like they've got you on a cocktail and a lot of times the docs have an idea of what it is/could be before they work it up. Additionally, they should have gotten preliminary information from the gram stain when they did your culture. In that capacity, they should probably have you on some broad spectrum and some limited spectrum meds based on what morphological class of organism they saw on that stain.

Also, I agree with Frazieme. Even if you did get hospitalized and your bill was $100,000... You can still make payments. Even it is $5 a month. As long as you've been paying towards it there's not much they can do. Please keep us updated and I hope you get to feeling better. Please don't delay treatment because of cost. It's not worth one of your limbs or your life.

Please PM me if you want to chat more.

Maybe I'm too new for the anxiously waiting part to hit yet, but I'm not even close to worrying when the decision will come. I'm not expecting to hear anything until late May at the earliest. I'll be THRILLED if I hear earlier, but I've consciously chosen not to look for anything for at least a month.

However, I've now developed a really nasty infection that may require ER and/or hospitalization. (Crossing fingers it doesn't.) I'm in the peculiar gap between my current (previous) US health insurance and going over to the UK. We were just hoping against hope I'd stay healthy, but one ER visit/hospitalization could bankrupt me.

I'm assuming that there's no reason UKVI would expedite our (already priority) application on compassionate grounds. Sad truth is that if my infection goes septic, I'll be too ill to fly to the UK anyway. My wife is beside herself.

I'm assuming there is nothing we can do. My wife called the lawyers but they were out yesterday and the person who answered clearly didn't know what he was talking about (said our visa would be processed in 10 days, which is a laugh).

One thing we've talked about, if I do end up hospitalized with bills I can't pay, is to declare bankruptcy before I go to the UK. If I'm going there anyway, the 7 years of crap credit here wouldn't affect me...but would it jeopardize my visa for the UK?
You could see if they have a program like the Colorado Indigent Care Program available where you are.

When I went to the ER in 2013 I was able to take a $3500 visit down to about $450 because I didn't earn that much.
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

see AV soooo many options for you. Who would have thought a immigration form would cover all your needs emotional, health and legal  ;D

please don't stress, you or your wife. Where there is a will there is a way and like lyonaria suggested might be a program or a payment plan to help you get all the care you need and deserve! Have to get you over to the UK in one healthy piece!

Please look into your state's health exchange. It's usually income based so you should qualify for Medicaid with no income. Do not forgo medical care because you don't have insurance! Send me a pm if you have any questions, I can at least try to help. In NYS the application is very straight forward for changes in circumstance.

Hey everybody. I read the forum a few weeks ago and thought I would join in with my timeline too.. as it is a bit unique.

Type: Fiance Settlement
Online submission: April 3
Bio-metrics: April 7
Sent to Sheffield Non Priority: April 10
Email Confirmation of Online Application being received: April 12
Purchased priority and sent updated PDF of change to Sheffield: April 13
Received confirmation email from Sheffield that application was changed to priority queue: April 26

It took them two weeks to write a confirmation that they received the change from non priority to priority.
We even wrote again last week asking them just to confirm because 700$ is a lot to waste if they never got the email!
But we got the email today... so now it's waiting until the decision email.
My wedding is July 1 in Florence... So I am hoping to have my passport AT LEAST by then. Otherwise.. I am supposed to move to London on June 5... really cutting it close!

Meagan.

Hi Meagan.  :)
The fiance visa is for those who wish to marry in the UK and remain there after the wedding. I'm not sure that they can approve you with a wedding planned for out of the UK?

I was wondering the same thing.

Also, I had no idea you were still allowed to upgrade to priority after Sheffield received your package. :-O

Hmm, that's interesting... the VFS Global website states that you are not allowed to upgrade from non-priority to priority anymore.

Hang on, if you're not getting married in the UK, why are you applying for a fiance visa?

The fiance visa is specifically for people who are getting married in the UK. In order to be granted the visa, you must show evidence that your wedding will take place IN THE UK.

If you are marrying in Florence, I don't think you can qualify for a fiance visa.
