Furniture Stores?
« on: April 13, 2017, 11:09:39 PM »
We have just measured the rooms in our new place and there is no way 3/4 of our US furniture is going to fit! Where would I start looking for decent quality furniture? Adult and kids beds are the immediate need but dining and living rooms soon thereafter. TIA!

DFS, Wayfair, IKEA/Argos if you don't mind putting things together yourself. Made. They're all online companies nationwide. There are probably good local companies too.

We got our couch from DFS, it arrives next Saturday.
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

Decent quality is going to be expensive, just be forewarned.

Most things here are 'flat packed' and still very expensive for what it is.

Oak furniture land is decent stuff for decent prices.  It's just all oak.

I was afraid that might be the case! It feels like we're almost starting over again - new small appliances, new furniture, new lamps/lighting... thanks for the suggestions!

We went with Ikea for starter furniture. It's not the highest quality, but it's functional and doesn't cost too much. Also, at Ikea, you can get pretty much whatever you need to do the basics - from furniture to forks to pillowcases. And, they deliver!

We got our sofa from DFS.  Invested a bit of money in it but we are literally in love with it.  I would honestly consider taking it back to the US with us.  We bought a fair few items from IKEA and certainly do love our daybed from there.  We have also purchased an entire suite of bedroom furniture (wardrobe, bedside tables, dresser) from Argos, but that was a huge hassle and I can't say that I am overly pleased with the pieces.

See if your town has British heart foundation furniture shops. We got our sofa and rocking/reclining chair brand new for under £150.  I wanted grey and its brown but hey beggars can't be choosers when your starting out lol.

There obviously is some old used stuff but ours often runs brand new items for a fraction of the cost.  We've gotten our desk and kitchen table and chairs there as well.

This is only if your looking to buy after your move as you can't just order online .  But it's definitely helped us budget wise. When we buy our own place I'll invest in what I really really want (:
