Unlocking a phone (iphone 6)
« on: April 19, 2017, 11:50:20 AM »
I did a search and only found one thread where unlocking a phone was mentioned. I'd rather try to unlock mine first than start over with a new phone ( too expensive).
Any tips? I *think* this phone was originally from AT&T, I got it from a friend. A shop in town said thay would need it for 3-4 days, it would cost £40, and only had a 70% success rate. :-/

Thanks!

I unlocked an iPhone 5c recently, but it was locked to Vodafone here.  The key was that it needed the network it was locked to to send it a code, then it was unlocked.  The person who sold it to me contacted Vodafone and they did it for free.  Is there any way you can work with AT and T?  If not, get a second opinion from another dodgy phone shop.

One more thing, the network called Giff Gaff is online only and has a support forum that's full of people who have mobile phones as a hobby.  You might get better advice there, and it's a good network to join.

Hi Angela,

Are you in the US? If so, you might need to contact AT&T and get an unlock code/service from them. It's also possible some independent type mobile phone specialists can and will unlock a handset as well. If/when you do that, check this thread I put up a short while ago which allows you to check your particular handset and it's model/version to see which networks it'll work on in other countries.

If you are in the UK, see what an Apple store can do for you. If they can't or won't, then you'll need to try an Apple service centre and if they won't/can't, then do try the independent type specialists. Check the compatibility link above to see which UK networks will work fully with your particular handset.

Cheers, DtM! West London & Slough UK!

I hadn't bought an iPhone off of someone (this was 2 years ago) and I contacted Sprint via an online chat and they were able to sort out unlocking the phone for me. I did need some of the account information from the person who sold it to me as their account needed to be fully paid off and in good standing, but they did it for me and it was free. Can you ask your friend who you bought it off of and see if they can contact AT&T to unlock it? They will need a few numbers from you from your phone, the serial number and something else, but it is super easy to do. Just make sure you back up your contacts and all your data to a laptop before trying anything. This should work!

I had Verizon before I moved, Dec 2015. I just had gotten my iPhone and the Apple Store actually told me that they weren't be locked anymore. Maybe it was just Verizon phones, but I'd check with apple they might be able to help.

This is what I originally planned to do as I was worried about the cost of buying a new phone. However, AT&T were absolutely useless and they did not understand what I needed them to do. I ended up having my mom call and close the account the day we got here. WE owned both phones so no fees and no money lost. Just an expensive ipod at this point. Good news, phones and phone plans here are CHEAP compared to the US. I got a brand new iPhone 7 and 15GB of data/month. The plan is about £40/month and I only paid £10 for the phone. Our phone bill in the US was $250 a month and a $800 phone! Much easier here. It was no hassle at all. I just changed my region/country on my apple ID and it's all worked perfectly!

Who is your phone with?!
When I got my new one last year the cheapest I could get an iPhone 6 (Feb 2016) was £45 And that was with crap data.
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

I got mine with EE. I just looked at the receipt and We actually didn't pay anything for the phone, it would have been £10 otherwise. We got a deal from the service guy for it being Easter weekend. Still much cheaper than anything I have ever found in the US. They were very nice and it was all set up and easy to do! Happy with everything so far!
