There are apps that you can use to control what sites they use and when, if it's an issue. But I always felt they were a bit intrusive.

Oh yeah, totally. I know bout the apps but I'm not sure I would feel comfortable using them if I have children at some point. Everybody is different though!

I would definitely have filters, there are things kids don't need to access at certain ages.

I was a precocious kid and read adult booms at 10, but you don't need access to the entire internet at that age.
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

I think there's a difference between filters and full on monitoring apps to monitor everything. But, thankfully, that's something I don't have to worry about for a good few years (if ever).

Albatross comes out of left field to make me spew my coffee all over my desk!

It's true, though!
Most people I meet have never heard of my favourite film (although I think I've previously mentioned it on UKY):  Bad Timing.

If you google it, one of the hits calls it 'a sick film for sick people', which makes me laugh... it's not sick, it's riveting and real, and I think we probably all know people in relationships like that.  Nothing sugar-coated.

Anyway, sorry for diverting your thread.  I probably need to add that I don't have children, and that is undoubtedly a very good thing!

Don't worry about diverting my thread, we were just chatting.

I'll check out that film next chance I get.

It's very angst-ridden!

Jimbo, you won't want your 13-year old seeing this one!  :-X

I'll keep that in mind as well.

My daughter announced at the dinner table that she was done watching it.  She shrugged when I asked her about suicide and rape.

hah maybe just try "thoughts?" I think, when I was 13, I literally would have wanted to crawl back up into myself if one of my parents asked me about rape and suicide. We had open communication...but not that open. I do think it's good hat you've taken an interest though! A lot of parents now adays seem like they could care less (based on nieces/nephews friends).

Everyone seems to be obsessed with this show.
I haven't seen it, but it sounds horrid. However it's all the rage, so all the kids gotta watch it...blahblahblah....
Glad I don't have teenagers!  😉

Lol I watched it and am not a teenager....but I was a teenager when I read the book so I I did kind of feel like I had to check it out because I read the book.

I didn't think it was thaaaaat horrid, but it seems like there's this big divide where 50% of the people love it and 50% of the people either watched it and hated it or or don't care about it at all.

I won't be watching it. I taught a girl who committed suicide last year... which I am still finding difficult to process as is everyone still at the school.

I'm currently dealing with a disclosure of self-harm.

It's not that I don't want to know, it's just that the real thing is disturbing enough. The most important question I learned to ask is: 'what is keeping you safe?'

That makes sense and I totally can appreciate that (sorry that happened to you!). I know that feeling as I still don't feel ready to watch the movie about the Boston marathon bombings as it still feels too fresh and close to home for me.

A few weeks ago my 15-year-old stepson said he'd watched it and thought it was great. I haven't seen it, and he and I aren't really close enough that he'd be comfortable talking about it with me (I've only been spending significant amounts of time with him for the last three months). I have, however, been reading a lot of articles about the show with perspectives from both sides (i.e., it's good to show death isn't pretty vs. we shouldn't encourage such acts by dramatizing them). I think it's a real conundrum. I'll probably get around to watching it eventually, but I am a bit nervous about the rape scenes thanks to my personal experiences.
