Offered a UK job..... I think
« on: May 19, 2017, 03:23:10 PM »
Hey everyone,
I've been getting nowhere looking for a job.....any job. On Wednesday I applied for a full time position with a retail business here in Inverness. Thursday morning I received a text message for an interview later that afternoon. After speaking to them, I was offered a position managing their new store that opens tomorrow. They want me to come in for four hours tomorrow to see what I think and how I do......
This whole situation seems a bit odd to me, certainly not how it's done in the states. I have been in numerous management positions so I am qualified, but no request for NIN, right to work etc. and I could really use some input as something seems off somehow.

If it seems off, it usually is.   :-\\\\

You've been to the interview and talked to them face to face haven't you?  If so, you know far more about it than strangers on the internet.  What's your feeling?

If your main concern is about them not asking about your legality to work, I wouldn't worry about that.  They are probably just too busy trying to open this store to worry about that for now.  They are also thinking they'll see how you do over the four hours before thinking about your right to work.

Sounds to me like they could be legit and just disorganised and clueless, which is not uncommon.

I would show up, what's the worst that could happen?

Google the company name?  Check it out on the company's house website and Google the names that come up there?

At worst it will be some multi level marketing pretending to be a job.  Just run at the first sign of that.  Also, don't let them go too long without paying you.

Tried googling the company, multiple stores but no actual website to look into. Really need to discuss pay schedules, I'll go in for a few hours but I'm going to be looking for details.

Thank you for your advice. Other than my wife I don't know anyone here, so talking about it with strangers on the internet who live here can be an invaluable help.

Don't let clueless and disorganised scare you off, those can be the best companies to work for.  Just as long as they pay you, roll with anything else.

I agree with Jimbo.  Worth investigating.  But honestly, gut instincts tend to be right...

Yes, please do Rick but I agree, it sounds a bit fishy.

So, just back home from my time with the new company. New shop is stocked but no signage out front. Spent maybe an hour there and was sent up to the the store in the town center. Never given a floor walk or introduced to anyone as the new manager. Brief discussion with the Greek gentleman that hired me and they want to give me minimum wage for the first six weeks.....no details on any company or store processes. They want me back in tomorrow, and there needs to be something serious discussed. At this point there is absolutely nothing in writing and I was basically just turned loose to assist on the floor..... I have been in management and this all feels very wrong to me.
