Oops! Misread. Thought you said WE (UKY) should get to pick the baby's name. I was all set to vote, too!

We've been polling everyone we can who doesn't know any back story.  Sadly I feel UKY would be biased on my side!

Kids won't increase fees or anything.

They are just expensive in general!   ;D
Haha. Kids that are UK citizens (which yours will be) don't increase the fees. Just is case someone with non-UK kids sees this. 😁
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

I mean, that could work, too!

Us?  Biased?  Noooo....  Clearly the lack of sleep has gone to your head.  Go have a nap while we take a vote.

I thought the fee was increased if you had a dependent?

Only if the child is not a UK citizen and is also applying for a visa.

UK citizen children are entitled to claim government benefits so they do not need o be included in the financial calculation (unless you are exempt from meeting the financial requirement and are showing adequate maintenance instead).

I wouldn't bet on that. Americans and other native English speakers are usually seen as 'not that kind of immigrant' but what about the spouses who are from eastern Europe? Folks who voted on immigration want lower immigration and they don't care how it will happen because it doesn't affect them.

Theresa May wants Britain to leave the European Convention on Human Rights, the big one of which is a right to family.

Well, we can't really know for sure why people voted the way they did. I speak from my own experience where my husband's families and friends are constantly surprised and disappointed in how shitty this whole process has been for us. They didn't expect non-EU spousal visa processes to be so harrowing, but then again, it's not something they were ever aware of. I can't speak for those I don't know, but I definitely think huge amounts of immigration from eastern Europe plays into it - I don't think spouses of UK citizens make up a huge amount of those people, but I could be wrong. You're right that they want immigration down no matter what, but I don't think they know that what's getting attacked is the spousal visa process, but who is to know?

WOWWW great news!!  [smiley=blush.gif] So, if my husband is a British citizen and I give birth in England, my child will be a British citizen too? Can they get dual citizenship?

Set up a survey monkey?

And if you want, I can do a poll for you on my Facebook page. I have a fairly large group of responders who ADORE polls.

Exactly. Xenophobia at its finest.

It's the same thing happening in the US- the talk about illegal immigration almost always centers around immigrants from south of the border (central or south America), when statistics show that majority of illegal immigrants are Asians who have overstayed their student or work visa!

They're born with dual citizenship. You have to let the US consulate know if their birth and they will have to file taxes in the US forever. Just like the rest of us!

Completely untrue. The majority of immigrants who are without a current US visa are from either Europe or Canada, depending on what timeframe and statistic source you're using. Take, for example:

http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2017/03/08/517561046/how-americas-idea-of-illegal-immigration-doesnt-always-match-reality

There are a lot more other examples, but I won't sidetrack the discussion any more than we already have.

And don't forget that ALL immigration to the US was illegal, i.e. the Pilgrims coming without any authorization.

Even if they are not born in the UK they will be a dual-citizen from birth, because you and your spouse hold UK and US citizenships.

However, being born in the UK means they can automatically pass their UK citizenship down to their children even if those children are born abroad.

But if your children are born outside the UK they cannot pass down their UK citizenship to their children if those children are born abroad.

Thank you for that link! I can't quite remember when I read about overstayed visas, but it was before the election, so it might not have been the best source - it also was no NPR. Possibly I just read the information wrong, as that article quotes a Pew poll that shows Asians as being one of the demographics with increased unauthorized stays. I just read through the link and found it pretty interesting in terms of shifting immigration data.

I was not insinuating anything about immigration in general, but was just commenting on how ideas of immigration and immigrants is often misconstrued in racist and xenophobic ways. Apologies for derailing or making statements that didn't prove true, it wasn't my intention, but I appreciate the correction all the same.
