I MISS TRADER JOES
« on: November 30, 2004, 06:57:25 PM »
Ok, so i did 90% of my shopping there.  It was wonderful food, the frozen food was great.  It was pretty inexpensive and it just....was....my kinda store.  DH joked that when i moved the one on Beacon St. in Brookline MA would  go out of business.

So for those of us who know the greatness that is trader joes, what did you buy on a regular basis?

Me:
Dried Granny Smith Apple rings (so chewy, so heavenly)
Soy crisps in BBQ (a bag with about 3 servigs for 99 cents and SO GOOD AND HEALHTY)
The frozen fajitas
The frozen grilled eggplant parm
the roasted garlic hummus was TO DIE FOR
they had a red pepper and eggplant dip that was YUMMY
the miranges.  oh god.

i'm upsetting myself here as they had so much to make healthy eating easy.  the prepared foods didn't have a lot of additives.  things like frozen green beans tasted wonderful when cooked......

*sigh*

24 more months till i'm out of this country.

You've been here 2 months and you're already counting down when you're leaving because of a grocery store?  I just got back from the US.  It was nice to be home and see my family but I just don't understand being all chuffed over a food store.  If you're homesick, that's one thing but counting down the months until you can get apple rings?   ???

Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

If it makes you feel any better, I'm in the US and miss Trader Joes.  The closest one is over 2,000 miles away.

It is the best place to pick up nibbly things for parties!  I especially miss the little cat-shaped cookies - so good and so low in fat!  Ooh, and their milk was so much cheaper than the supermarket.

Now I'm depressed....

The sesame crackers, the hummous (drool), the variety of cereals both hot and cold, the variety of juices, the wholegrain blueberry waffles, the frozen meals...God, my mind is blanking right now on what else I would buy, but I shopped there regularly. Mmm, and the Christmas shaped cookies are oh so yummy too. Has anyone had those?  :)

That's also what I loved about TJ's, Aimiloo, everything in it was organic and natural so you didn't have to be paranoid whether what you were buying was healthy or not and just shop to your heart's content. I have yet to find an organic/natural food store here, and if I did I bet it wouldn't compare.  :-\\\\

Kristi, I've been here since April, and once the novelty wears off of being in a new country, you really start to crave simple things back home you once could take so easily for granted.

I've heard so many good things about TJs I wish we had one here in Houston. Fat chance of that happening any time soon. ::)

Oh I know how you feel :( as a homesick Brit, my discovery of  TJ's in Connecticut was my "best find" - it's where I found crumpets, british cheese and lumps of Ghiradelli chocolate and really delicious natural bits and pieces :)

There was also another fabulous store, very similar but more upmarket called " Hay Day" that was even better- soon as I get back there, my best friend and I are planning a run to get some of their wonderful molasses cookies :)

I *never* imagined I would long for American stores ;)

Sorry you feel homesick girl- hang in there :)

Sheril.

I loved Trader Joe's...living in Watertown and working in Cambridge I lived/worked near two TJs!  Frozen food was great, wonderful 2 buck chuck!, great chocolate covered stuff, and so inexpensive compared to other stores in the area...plus the coolness of the store clerks added to the adventure.  But I have to admit that being able to walk to two local grocers does make up for that loss and I'd rather be in London working at this school with my new guy than unhappy in Cambridge (work was horrid)...

New Dawn, with the TJs and HayDay comment, i'm thinking you must be in Fairfield county CT!

in Darien we had TJs and HayDay was in NewCanaan (and i think westport and greenwich?)
