Kristi, I've been here since April, and once the novelty wears off of being in a new country, you really start to crave simple things back home you once could take so easily for granted.

Really?  I've been here for over 2 years and the "novelty" hasn't worn off yet...there is NOTHING (especially not food items!) in the US that I miss enough to want to leave the UK for.

i'm sure i'll feel better after i've been here a while.  but after 2.5 months i still want to run home to my friends and family.

it's pathetic i know, but as much as i love being with my husband and as much as i LOVE london, it's no home yet.

See I am always torn by these topics.  For people who adjust to their new homes fairly easily it's hard to hear someone complaining about the little things because it's the little things that don't matter really.  You can buy and find almost anything here.  Let's face it the UK is not the middle of nowhere.

BUT one also has to understand that people do get homesick and miss things. Even those well adjusted folks get a wild hair up their butts sometimes and miss things. Some people are never meant to leave home.  Some don't adapt well and some people are just miserable gits no matter where they live and never happy. I don't care if you move from one state to the other or move countries.  For some a move to a different town is just as hard. Others adapt so well it's amazing.

Amiloo it sounds like good old fashioned homesickness to me.  I am sure you will start to find places that sell nice food stuff here that is close to Trader Joes.  I know it's not going to take the place of missing family and friends, but that too comes in time.  I was always taught from an early age that home is where your heart is.  It's not a physical place so much as the love between people.  As you get married and grow your heart home expands to include others like your spouse their family maybe and even your own children.  While your physical surroundings have changed a lot you now have the great chance to have two homes.  When you get homesick think of that.  Think of how lucky your are to be just where you are now.  Think of what life would be like without it all.  Also realize that eventually the physical place might even become home.  You have a tough spirit lady I am sure you will be fine.

As for food subjects... I can say that I have always been very bad about missing food.  I miss our "local" Bakery in Atlanta Alon's all the time.  It was a place to get great breads, incredible freshly roasted sandwhiches, greek Total yogurt ans lovely cheeses.  I miss Sweet Grass Dairy in Thomasville, GA.... winner of lots of cheese awards, I miss the lovely breads and tajines I had in Morrocco, I miss the burgers at the Vortex in Ga, the milkshakes and cones at Dumar's in Norfolk VA., I miss being able tot go to a bar in Spain and get cheap and great homemade food, I miss the street yakimandu in Korea and well my mom's beans and rice and her wonderful fideos and tons of other things.  One of the great things about food is that it, like our sense of smell reminds us of good times and places.

I think it's not so much about the apple rings, but about the life one lead while buying the apple rings.

Well that's it for my long winded post.

I guess I just want to encourage people to seek and use foods that they love to bring back memories and keep traditions going. Also to try to always keep things in perspective and be thankful for what you do have.

hehe.  i never thought this thread would get so much...emotional stuff.

i just missed having a store where i could find healthy things easily and not be tempted by 'bad' things like i am so easily here.  :)

i've been really good about embracing the foods here-i freaking love parsnips and could eat them till they come out my ears.

i think the homesickness comes from my mom saying to be every time i talk to her 'i want you to come home, i miss you too much'.  Just when i think i'm adjusting and starting a good life here she hits me with that stuff and i get sad again.

I think i just need to tell her to knock it off.....that will help loads i think.

I'm well aware of that.  I've been here 6 months.  Trust me, the novelty isn't what it was.  But I also wouldn't pack my bags and go home because I miss food.  I can find just about everything I like here.  I'd be lying if I said I don't miss good Mexican food but like Liane said, living in London is a dream come true for me and I'd rather be here than back home in CA.

Aimiloo, my mom said the same kind of thing to me when I first moved here but in time, she'll get used to you being here.  It's probably time to have a chat with her about how you feel when she tells you how much she wants  you to come back to the US.  Becoming more entrenched in the US won't help you adjust to life here.  I had a hard time right about the time I was here 6-8 weeks.  It's not easy but getting out and making new friends helped a lot.

Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

We have a Harvey Nichol's here in Edinburgh.  Their food store stocks a lot of different and interesting foods, including many American ones.  Can't say I miss much food-wise from the States after nearly 3 years, but if you do you might try looking in some Asian food stores - you'd be amazed at the yummies they carry!

I wouldn't pack it all up and go home for the sake of missing food, either, lol. I find equivalents food I ate back home and I eat alot of different things too, no problem. I was just trying to be sympathetic. :)

When I say novelty, I mean the excitement of being in a brand new country-- everything's new, and living here still feels like an extended vacation. That feeling eventually wears off and reality sets in, but even then you can STILL enjoy living here, of course. Personally, I love it, but there's obviously the occasional feeling of homesickness. But not *everyone* is going to be 100% happier here.

Whoa, this is supposed to be a Trader Joe's thread... I'm sorry... :D :-X

No offence, but I just never felt that.  This has been home since I stepped off the plane - therefore no "homesickness."

I know I'm in the minority - but whilst not *everyone* is going to be 100% happier here, neither does *everyone* have the "honeymoon" experience or bouts of homesickness.

UPDATE:

So i just tried to tell my mom that it's talking to her and having her guilt me about being away that makes me homesick...

and she said 'well i've figured it out, you're always so short on the phone with me everytime we talk and it's like i was with your father when we were apart....it was harder to talk to the person as you missed them so much.  you miss us and home so much you can't bear to talk to us on the phone for a long time'.

um, yeah mom.  if that gets you through all of this, that's fine.   :)  i know she can't deal with the fact i used to call her 5 times a week and now, it's once a week  ::)
