I don't have a car either so I rent an hourly hire car through Europcar. It is  £5.5 an hour or £33 a day.

I've only had one lesson so far but I have 9 more scheduled. They are definitely needed

What is the amended part that needed to be signed? There is SO much paperwork to do, and I don't want to wait any longer than necessary. Haven't even gotten to call the GP yet.

Has anyone else applied for a provisional driving license yet? If so, how long did it take to arrive? And where did you sign up for your driving lessons? Not having a car or access to a car is the biggest difficulty for me living here...I'd even rate that higher than tax info or access to medical care. I know that I technically can drive on my US license for a year, but I've heard all kinds of stories about how long it takes to get driving and theory test appointments. Plus, who knows if I'll pass the first time...

AV, wait until you get a few other things done before applying for the provisional license.  Your BRP will be returned pretty quick (2-4 weeks) but that will seem like a long time if you are trying to do other admin or get a job.  You can start lessons without your provisional which will be the most time consuming part.

OMG!

I had no idea that it would take this long to start the driving test process AND they would keep my BRP for it. That and I keep trying to find a good driving instructor/school, and I can't get anywhere. Plus, I have no transportation and even public transportation isn't an option yet as I have no UK money or bank account. It's taken five days to get deodorant, and I can't get anything done.

I really wish I could have done some of this while in the US when I was waiting endless weeks for the visa to come through. It's such a nightmare being completely helpless, dependent, and without even one shred of adult dignity. :(

AV, you don't need your provisional license right away. It also costs about £30 to get if I remember right.

Wait... you do need it for your theory test.
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

I didn’t think you could apply for your provisional license until you were here for 6 months?

But you can drive on your US license for a year so no rush. You can take lessons with your US license.

Nope, you can apply for the provisional at any time :).

What is the 6 month rule in regards to then? It had something to do with the drivers license.

What is the 6 month rule in regards to then? It had something to do with the drivers license.

There is a rule for EEA citizens/residents that they have to have been in the UK for 185 days before taking the test. This is only for EEA citizens/residents, to prevent them coming over to the UK just to take the tests and then go back to their EEA country of residence

This ONLY applies to EU/EEA citizens/residents. People on visas from outside the EU do not have this restriction.

From the driving licence documentation booklet:

If you want to take a GB driving test you must normally live in GB. If you have moved to GB recently from another EC/EEA country, you must have lived in GB for 185 days in the 12 months before you can apply for a driving test and a full licence.

Ah... that's where the confusion comes in then. Excellent!

My brp is going to be delivered tomorrow and then I've got a trip back to North Carolina for 12 days in July so I'll not be applying anytime soon.

No worries :). Just be aware that sometimes the driving instructors/examiners themselves misunderstand the 185-day rule and try to insist that you must have been here for 6 months. That's not the case - the section about people moving to the UK from other countries (page 8 ) only says you need to take the tests within the first 12 months in order to continue driving.

I'm going to need a full year of driving lessons anyway. Lol.

My mind is finding it extremely difficult to remember which way the traffic is coming from. I'm sure it would be easier if I had a car I could drive regularly. But I'll make due with the hire car and the monthly lessons.

Received my NI number today! So just about 4 weeks from sending in the application. I will say that I know I've been absurdly lucky with my whole transition experience( 1 week non priority approval, 3 weeks for bank account and one month for this). All of it because you all helped me each step of the way.

not sure why, but other than the visa getting this made me feel the most like I'm here for good!

So happy it's been a smooth experience for you and that you're settling in well. We always hear the horror stories, so it's lovely to hear about it when things go as they should.  :)

I really wish I could have done some of this while in the US when I was waiting endless weeks for the visa to come through. It's such a nightmare being completely helpless, dependent, and without even one shred of adult dignity. :(

So I applied for the NIN and it took about three weeks, no interview since applied outside of UK...had same confusing experience on phone with them and had to call a few times.

Going to the bank tomorrow with my letter regarding my NIN to open an acct an transfer funds before the cash I brought runs out, but I have been able to us my us credit card here, I have to sign for purchases even though I have a chip and chip and sign is not common here.  You should be able to use a bank card but will likely have fees.

I plan to post the provisional license application which we got from post office tomorrow and the fee is 43 unless I am missing something.  I was going to apply online but saw on a video from lovemybrit.com that they mail you the application to mail back even if you apply online...I think so you can provide pic and proof of identity (BRP card).. will let you know how long it takes to get the license.

I got giffgaff for cell phone bc it's pay as you go and I figured I wouldn't be able to get a plan with no credit...next I hope to get a credit card to start building credit.

GP was easy, I had no proof of address but they knew my husband since it's a small village and everyone know each other's business...so far the Dr has been pleasant other than facilities being old...and carpet in the rooms which to me is so gross...def not the top of the line stuff used to back home, but...it's free.
