Odd and random question
« on: June 13, 2017, 10:18:02 AM »
Hey all,

So I have a weird...habit, I guess you could call it. I like to look at houses. I regularly check out property websites for houses out here on the Oregon coast, I look at property websites for houses in central Oregon where my sisters live. I just like to look at houses. So I was messing around and looking at houses over there in England. A lot of the houses I saw where super beautiful and I hold out hope of owning one, one day. Ok so now time for my weird question. Where is the dryer? I see pictures in a lot of these houses, I can see what looks like the washer (in the kitchen?) but I typically don't see the dryer. Am I missing something? Is it hidden? Do people typically not own a dryer? I understand this is a super weird question, but I thank you all in advance for any and all info.

Lololol. The dryer...

It is called a drying line outside or a drying rack inside.

Some people have a combo washer/dryer but not that many.

This comes up a lot!

Typically here, washing machines are in the kitchen. Sometimes what you see may be a combined washer/dryer. A lot of people don't have a dryer at all and dry their clothes outside on the line or around the house on airers.

It's a space thing. Some houses do have a utility room but it's the exception.

It's also an energy thing. I've never used a dryer in the UK, but from what I've been told, the dryers you do find in the UK tend to not use as much energy, so they take longer and they don't get clothes fully dry so they'll still need to be hung for a bit. You do find some washer/dryer combos (both in one machine), but I've heard mixed reviews.

We rent and we've always been lucky to have a washing machine, but never a dryer. We just hang clothes up inside or outside of the weather fits. In the winter, we put the almost-dry clothes on the radiators to crispen them up. We've developed a system. ;) You get used to it.

When we go to the US to visit, we don't put out clothes in the dryer. We don't want them to get damaged or shrink on holiday! Although that would be a good excuse for our clothes not fitting after a long holiday visiting my family. ;)

You'll find that with some of the "sensor" dryers, they will stop before the load is fully dry. I don't have one of those because I read a lot of reviews before choosing the one I did and this was a frequent complaint.
Without the sensor, you can go as dry as you want to.

We have a Bosch combination washer/dryer. Whilst the dryer function takes forever (almost 3 hours) and your clothes often end up very wrinkled, it actually works and the clothes are completely dry.

Thanks everyone. I knew it was a bit of a silly question, but the last time I lived over in England, I was younger then 5 and I am almost 32 now. That's a bit of time to not quite remember things. So thanks again for all the answers. You guys are so helpful  ;D

It already takes 2 hours just to wash a load on a regular setting... add in 3 hours to dry? Yikes.

I dry my clothes on a portable oil heater. Once it warms up, it only takes about 3 minutes to dry a regular cotton shirt. Maybe 15 minutes for my jeans. You just have to find a system that works for you.

And I didn't think it was a ridiculous question. It's just one of those things I laugh about now because I was originally like, "You can't be serious". There are lots of things that fit into that category now.

I'm learning, I love to learn. And I want to continue to learn as much as possible between now and the hopeful move in 3-5 years. I will continue to stalk here, read things, and continue to ask. I mean I may feel a little weird asking sometimes, but I've always told people "the only stupid question is the one you don't ask." I think that applies here. But thanks again all for your input.

Condenser dryer?
If you take them out immediately after it's done and shake them you can get a lot of the wrinkles out. At least that's what I found. They're horrible if they cool down in the dryer!
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

I've lived in this area for about 4 years now, before I lived in central Oregon (more specifically Redmond) for about 13 years. At least here on the coast I am used to the rain. It rains for a solid 9 months, from the start of fall to the end of spring nothing but rain, rain, rain.

I liked Lincoln City and honestly, the coast in general. I've only been here in Scotland for just under three months. Had moved to Denver for work then the really big jump across the pond.
