Moving Money from US bank to UK bank
« on: June 13, 2017, 06:42:11 PM »
Seem to be having a few problems being able to do this in a lump (under $10000 as that's the flag for MOney laundering).

US bank won't do wire transfer internationally (Capital One 360). They will only do person to person transfer for $2000 to a bank that's linked to the account for more than 30 days and in same name (which son doesn;t have). Seems like most US banks find international wire transfers a problem.

How have other people transferred their funds from US to UK without losing lots of money and without having to do lots of small transactions.

Do not do a bank to bank transfer, you'll get a horrid rate of exchange.

I also use Transferwise and can highly recommend them.  :)

I jumped through hoops trying to get money from my USA bank to my UK account when I was having a housing crisis so trust me the struggle is real.

I just switched to Transferwise after hearing about it on here. It's honestly so easy and pretty fair.

yeah I absolutely recommend transfer wise. Used it for both euro to pound and dollar to pound transfers and everything has been so easy and smooth!

There is no need to stick to less than $10k. I have transferred much more than that before in one go using XE and Transferwise.

The $10k level only matters if you are doing something illegal, but even then IIRC as Denis Hastert found out, multiple $9,900 transfers to avoid raising flags is illegal in itself.

I also transferred well over a 6 figure sum without problems in January this year while buying a house in England.

In January a few days before we left the USA I sold our car to the VW dealership in town and they gave me a check for $14,000 which was over the max allowed for a mobile deposit to my US bank  so I went with my son into his bank and endorsed the check so he could deposit it into his account.  He then set up a Transferwise account and as a new member could only transfer $5,000 at a time using ACH (no fee).  Over the next 3 weeks he paid the $14,000 into my UK bank account in 3 payments.

A month later he was called into his bank to talk to their fraud department as it appeared he was "structuring", taking in a sum of money and paying it out in smaller payments.

So it seems like the consensus is to use transferwise which is what I think I'll do with money now that my tax refund came in and we're going on holiday next month, so could use the money.  How long does a transfer take, usually?  We're not talking a huge sum here (compared to some previous posts on this forum) if that makes a difference.

When I lived here before as a student my mom used to send me money using xoom, which was instant.  However it looks like it's not able to be used by me here to transfer money from myself to myself. Seems like transferwise is pretty cheap anyway, so it's a comparable commission taken out.

My transfers usually arrive within a couple of hours. At the very end of the transaction, it'll check the speed of the transfer and give you an eta. It always comes sooner than that!

I have never had a Transferwise transaction complete in 1 day. It is sometimes next business day but has taken 3 to 5 business days. These are all ACH bank transfers rather than for fee wire transfers.

I usually use xe.com for small amounts, but noticed that BofA has a maximum amount i can transfer, I think $10,000, so i stopped into a local branch as we are hopefully moving over soon and need to transfer more than that, I was hoping to do it in one go due to the wire fee's.  They said I could only transfer to an account in my name and was not allowed to go through a 3rd party, so basically a bank to bank transfer, any ideas on what i can do? I might need to check with another personal banker as I don't know if what he was telling me was correct.
