I dont know a lot about it, cos i try to avoid the royals as much as possible, but i think the royal's 'titles' are just traditions... they dont actually mean anything.  Does the Queen sort of dole them out as gifts?
Like Prince Andrew became the Duke of York when he got married, and Prince Philip I suppose became Duke of Edinburgh when he married the Queen.

Not sure about the Duke of Edinburgh, but the others are not just empty titles.  Charles, for example, derives incomes from the Duchy of Cornwall and I would assume Andrew does from York (and so on).  They have homes there and are expected to be part of the community to whatever degree-i.e. to watch or march in parades and attend certain government events in the area.  Some of the titles have traditional duties as well, though I can't think of any off the top of my head I know there are some that are rather like the Pope's annual foot-washing.

And I am pretty sure it is only the MALE royals that get these kind of  titles bestowed on them, hence Princess Anne is The Princess Royal and not Princess of  Shropshire or wherever.

Yeah, I think they only get them upon marriage, like the Earl and Countess of Wessex, that title being created for him ont he wedding day, and Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowden getting that on her wedding day.
