Name the one place in London you'd go see.....
« on: December 02, 2004, 09:47:02 AM »
We are headed to London this weekend and I know we won't be able to visit much and we don't have a lot of money to spend so what is the one place you would recommend me seeing and why?  We have done the double decker bus all over tour and seen Trafalgar Square and the museum next to it and that is all I have seen touristy wise.

Thanks!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the London Eye.  Probably because it gives an amazing view of the Houses of Parliament... ;)  But it really is incredible.  Done it 3 times - can't wait to do it again!

Of course, just walking along the Embankment is cool - street performers and the various bridges (I'm an architecture freak) and all.  And the pubs you can stop in for a pint along the way!  ;D

If it was summer I'd say do a riverboat cruise but it isn't so I'll say Victoria and Albert Museum. This is definitely my favourite museum in London - it houses art treasures dating back to ...........??? Waaaaaaaaaaaay back when. The jewellery gallery is my favourite bit :)

Go to Old st. tube, walk around Brick Lane and then take the bus up to the Geoffrey museum, full of period rooms and an ace cafe.

The British Museum would be someplace that you would enjoy :)  Plus it's free!  To see the Reading room, and the Elgin Marbles, The Rosetta Stone,, just awesome stuff!  I embarassed hubby by getting weepy when I finally got to see the Elgin Marbles LOL,, but I have been so interested in Ancient Greek History since I was 12, so it was really very special to me.

The London Eye is a must see...must do.. but because I never made  it in..  the hours were  obscure.. I got to  it..but not inside Westminster Abbey..  still can't wait to  see it..  I did enjoy the  double decker bus tour with the earphones  narrating as you went  along.. I loved that you could hop on and  off whenever you wanted..and yes. of course Trafalgar Square!!

enjoy!

Am I the only one who climbed the stairs of THE MONUMENT?  It's the place where the London fire started -- designed by Sir Christopher Wren.  £1 to go up the 312 (?) stairs and when you come back down -- you get a certificate!

The view is great!  Cheap fun and a cardio workout too! ;)

have you seen this

Put on your walking shoes and follow the south bank of the Thames from Tower Bridge to Westminster Bridge.  It's an almost traffic free walk and you will pass tons of interesting things/people, including ...

Butlers Wharf - super warehouse conversion into flats/shops/cafes
Tower Bridge - need I say more?
New City Hall - groovy new architecture
HMS Belfast - one for the military minded??
Something or the other Wharf (can't remember its name) - a filled in dock, lined with shops and cafes (undercover and warm!)
Southwark Cathedral - ancient and atmospheric
Borough Market - on a Saturday - foodie heaven - tremondous - stop here for lunch
Replica of the Golden Hind ship - one for the kids??
Wine museum - very interesting
Old pub - can't remember its name, but it's old and good
The Globe - Shakespeare's theatre - aboslutley brilliant
The Tate Modern - zowee - big power station now art gallery
Gabriels Wharf/Oxo Tower - arts/food complex
South Bank Arts Centre - incl Museum of the Moving Image, National Theatre, second hand book sale udner Waterloo Bridge

... and great views of London all the way along, lots of places to stop/visit/eat/drink/recuperate.

I know that's not one place, but it's a god taster!

British Museum

Tower of London-not only is it fascinating but they have the Crown Jewels!

Westminster Abbey-so old!  I haven't been there yet but want to go.  There is also a plaque there to a Lord Mayor of London who was tried for treason and killed back in the 17th century (I believe)-Sir John Friend-an ancestor of my husband's.

(can you tell I have a thing about medieval history?  Except the BM, which is just cool.)

And Covent Garden is cool for the shopping and crazy street performers, also right near there is the Actor's Church (I think it's called) where Vivien Leigh is buried if you're interested.

I am sooo jealous-just posting this has made me want to cry!

I'm dying to go to the Punk Exhibition at the Hospital Gallery in Covent Garden.

The Tate Modern is really cool also.   :)

As a Brit and a male, and an engineer (and seriously outnumbered here on all counts) I'm sure have a different take.
I live near London. I try to avoid the place like the plague. Too many people, too much traffic,  too expensive parking..........too expensive everything.

Of course there are lots of beautiful and interesting things to see.

Oh, but although it seems like it would be really, really cool, the London Dungeon is not that great.  OK if you have a bit of cash and some time to kill, but not a must-see by any stretch.
