Traveling on a Fiance visa?
« on: July 29, 2017, 07:12:48 PM »
Sudden panic (as one does) - we are planning to honeymoon abroad after our wedding in Scotland - will I be able to re-enter the UK on my vignette? I assumed so, because it's valid for 6 months, but you know what they say about assuming...

Scotland is in the UK. You won't be traveling abroad.

Punctuation error on my part. We are getting married in Scotland and then traveling to America for a couple of weeks.

Once you are married, you are not supposed to travel until after you have FLR(M) because you are no longer a fiancee.
We did have someone here do that not so long ago though and she was able to get back into the country with out much of a problem but I wouldn't recommend it.

Could you get organized in time for an in-person right after the wedding?

We haven't booked flights yet, but we were planning to leave two days after. We're celebrating with my family a week after the Scotland celebration. Our fault for not thinking that through.

Technically there's no travel once you are legally wed as you are no longer a fiancĂ©.  Any way to delay something?  Either the legal bit of the wedding or the honeymoon?

This is one of the million reasons we recommend not marrying in the UK.   :D

We could delay the signing and just do the church vows I suppose. Will they lift an eyebrow at me entering the country, leaving 2 weeks later, and returning 2 weeks after that?

No, that's fine.

Personally, I would do that. You'd be surprised how many people have two wedding dates.  One that is often private between the couple.   ;)

You and me both. When we started the process, all our bi-national couple friends (we have a good number) had gotten married in the UK, so we went with it. But now I'm seeing why you don't recommend it!

We're going to try to set up an in person for a couple days after the wedding, and if it hasn't come together by the day before the wedding, we'll hold off on signing. Thank you, Forum Friends, for all your help, as usual.

2 more questions - in reading the in-person appointment pieces, it says they will mail us the BRP up to a week later. Would that not still interfere with travel? Also, if we turn on a dime and go in the week after the wedding, we'll have our signed marriage schedule, but not the official license. Does that make a difference?

The BRP usually arrives 2 to 3 business days later.

I wasn't married here so am not too sure of the process.  I would think so long as you don't sign the register you aren't married.  You just want the legal bit to not be done.

You would need to wait until after you have received the BRP in the post before you can travel anywhere.

Also, you need to have the official marriage certificate before you can attend the in-person appointment (note: a marriage licence is just permission to get married which you get before the wedding ... it's the marriage certificate that proves you are married)

So, in that case your timeline would be:
- get married
- wait for the official marriage certificate to arrive
- attend in-person appointment
- wait for BRP to arrive in the post (most people get theirs in about 2-4 working days)
- fly to the US
