It arrived on Friday! I opened the door just in time to see the UPS guy drop it from the rail that he'd been trying to balance it on, onto the ground!

I've spent all weekend worrying that something was going to be wrong with it but so far, so good!
I'm sure those boxes are designed to absorb greater impact than that right?!  ;D

Definitely.  But UGH!  You didn't need to see that!

Right?! ... It was towards the end of Saturday before I could even bring myself to open the box!.. It was a big thud!

I'm glad it seems to be alright!  I mean, after everything else you've been through just trying to have a computer, the last thing you need is for UPS to destroy the new one before you even take possession of it!

Thank you!  :) I couldn’t believe it, but have spent the last several days rationalising that although the packaging is minimal, it must have been brilliantly designed to do the job!

There are people in the world who just design packaging (my next door neighbor is one).  They would have done serious analysis on what the right packaging was to protect the computer from all sorts of abuse.  The company is the one who would ultimately lose money if they were damaged in transit, so they protect against that.  :)

Thank you! I’ve been hoping someone would say something like that!  ;D

I think it would either be broken and not work straight out of the box, or you are fine. I wouldn't worry.

Hah!  I met a packaging engineer when I was visiting friends-of-a-friend in Michigan in 2007. She was their 'back' neighbor, and when she told me her occupation, I totally geeked out.  It sounds like an interesting job.  I instantly thought of those "unboxing" videos on YouTube (which were only just becoming a thing, so far as I know), and realized it was people like this woman who created those experiences.

I've had my computer all these months and have never once let it update.. too scared that something'll go wrong.

I have the feeling I should accept the latest update now though. Any advice for me?

I'm on HS 10.13.2 and 10.13.6 is what's available.

If it's a laptop or tablet, keep it plugged in so it can't run out of battery power before it's complete.  Definitely cross your eyes and three pairs of fingers as you click/tap to begin the update.

Do you use Netflix and/or Hulu?  What computer do you have?

It's a MacBook Pro. I do use Netflix but not Hulu.

I would definitely let it update but is there a particular reason you don't want to let it update?

Only that it is fine and I am scared that after I do it, it won't be fine!  But I'm just so far out of date I'm sure I should be doing something.

I have just seen a few reports of Netflix not working on Safari for MBP users who are on HS 10.13.6.  The simple solutions are to use Chrome (or some other browser), or to use a private tab in Safari.  Other than that, the build seems to be stable enough.  I think you're safe to update.  :)
